Last week, I've had the Warning System occasionally warn me to check the Rear Lamp, but on every occasion, after a few moments it went out. So this Sunday I checked the lamp, only to find that it was in a terrible condition. After removing the 'tail unit' I discovered that the rear of the lamp unit is unprotected from the elements! I've cleaned the unit to the best of my abilities, cleaned the tarnished lamp contacts (as their was nothing wrong with the lamp its self) and given everthing a nice smear with silicone grease. So thats two built-in electrical disasters, the first being the Fuel Pump Regulator!

Has anyone found a way to protect this single element tail light??

Cheers

John

Hi

Hi there, If I remember correctly at least one thread on here some were regarding the same problem. I have an 07 GSA from new and took rear light off and cut a plastic back plate for the original light. That worked great kept the crap out, when the 08 model came out with the new rear light unit (much much better) I popped to Ocean had a chat with Bill on parts and purchased the new light unite and lead that would let it connect to my 07 wiring loom. About a half hour job plug and play and all done. :D

In my view a worth while change :thumb2

But like most things it costs :augie

When I bought my first 1200, I took the rear light to pieces, sprayed ACF50 liberally over all the important bits, and reassembled it.

2 years later, the connections had crumbled to dust, and I was charged for a new one.

So, er, in answer to your question, no, I failed in my attempt. I've decided to do nothing on the new one. If it is not fixed, then hopefully at least it will become terminal while still within warranty. All that I achieved last time was extending the life just far enough that BMW no longer had any legal obligation to replace it for free.
