I have just fitted a Nippy Norman LED tail light bulb - but now a warning light comes on. Does anyone know why this happens and how to get around it?

1150 or 1200

Do you have a 1150 or 1200??

If its a 1200.. i think the LED bulb might not have the right resistance for the electronic wizardry.. was a comment i heard in passing. So i may be wrong..

If you got a 1150.. then.. sorry not sure...

Rocks

Its a 1150 GSA. I'm sure I saw something somewhere about this problem on another thread some time ago, but bugger if I can remember...

ABS..

It wasnt something to do with ABS was it..? I have vague recall of someone mentioning it.

Anyhow.. give Norman a ring, i a sure he will know/be able to sort it out.

Yup, the circuitry thinks the filament has blown because the LEDs have a much lower resistance than an ordinary bulb. If you could measure it, you would find also that the system is supplying around 6v to the brake light filament as a response to the tail-light blowing. This will not be enough to light the LEDs in the brake light, however. Only standard bulbs will work in the GS.

LED lights

Thanks for this littleredrooster.

Had a word with Nippy Norm and he suggested I fit the larger LED unit, which he duly sent. Unfortunately this didn't work either, so you were completely right across the board!

Never mind, I must rein in my urges to continually modify my bike!

I thought NN had wired something into the circuit board to fool the warning light into not coming when fitting these? Or did I not read the original posting properly? I was considering a tail light addition on safety grounds but now I'm not sure.......

According to NNs sales brochure (!) he sells a different LED board for ABS equiped bikes.
Check you have the right one.

Tail light mystery

Well I had another word with Norm who instead suggested that I use the LED - equipped number plate (with additional lights to the tail brake light). Can't be reading his own brochure too closely!

Anyway, I'm not really bothered, so long as other drivers notice the rear end.

QUERY

Just to clear up this query...
The bulbs will work on all non ABS bikes and some with, whereas the LED Light Panels are specifically designed for bikes with or without and as long as the correct one is fitted they work faultlessly without a 'blown bulb' light or anything else coming on.
The Light Panels were extensively tested and one is about to be released for the R1200GS and again it will work perfectly despite the Cat-Bus system. We have heard of multiple blown tail light bulbs on the 1200GS and obviously the Light Panel solves this problem as the LED's will last for the life of the vehicle.
