Just spent half an hour talking through rear wheel options for the XC. Talon seem confident they can adapt an existing cush drive hub to fit, and it does look stunning. Rough price for the XC is around £690 ish, but this hub has replaceable rubbers and pegs in the hub, so wear does not mean a knackered hub. Just as bloody well really.

There may be a non cush drive option, but the wheel dept didn't feel confident about going down that route, but it can be done. Hope this helps answer a few questions.

Well after a little research this afternoon over on the KTM forum regards talon cush drives, i think i'm inclined to steer clear of them for the time being :(. http://www.ktmforum.co.uk/adventure/101795-talon-cush-drive-failing.html

I have emailed Haan in the Netherlands to see what they have to say. Their hubs look more conventional in cush drive design, so shouldn't suffer from the issues the Talon offerings have been plagued with. have a look here: http://www.haanwheels.com/haan/catalogus/#/book1/22-23 there are good photo's on the page about rally raid wheels.

My XC wheels were laced and stitched at Haan but use the OEM hub with Excel rims. I think it worked out to about €1000 for both, including powder coating of the hubs.

Thanks for the feedback Mike. Your's would be the second bike i know of wearing a Haan wheel set.

Got a reply back from Haan this morning, and it doesn't sound hopeful. They "don't stock" a rear hub that will fit the XC bikes, and are unlikely to due to small sales opportunities? Which is a shame.

At least talon were pro-active on finding a solution.

Talking of which, after offering up various hubs yesterday, the nice chaps in the wheel room rekon a ktm 990 hub (from adventure?) will fit. The XC has a very large hub (compared to everything else), and the big ktm hub was the only thing that came close (with a cush drive), in terms of sprocket and disc spacing.

The downside is the ktm hub runs a 25mm axle, so if you wanted to run a ktm rear hub, it would need a sleeve and spacers made to suit. So similar in design to how the standard ktm front hubs have been for years, where the bearing runs on the shoulder of the spacer, and not directly onto the axle.

Then there is the question of final sprocket sizes. As i understand it, i think that KTM use a rear sprocket of aound 34 teeth. Which is much smaller than the standard XC by about 20 teeth, don't suppose anyone know's if ktm sprockets all use the same fitment pattern, which would allow use of the enduro bike sprockets on the 990 hub?

I know that Walter Colebatch is running a KTM axle/hub on his XC that was also stitched by Haan....he may be able to answer if you PM him on the ADV forum or the Sibirsky Extreme website!

That was an excel rim spoked onto a BMW hub by haan. The front wheel is a full ktm job

I got my "new" wheels back from Haan last weekend (I provided the hubs) and paid 600€ for the work and rims, in Germany (www.kfm-motorraeder.de) one can pick up the original hubs for ~236€ each, and then you need to add all the bits and pieces.

So a full set of wheels will be around 1000€ or higher depending on how much you want to swap around things (break disks, etc).

Update.

Spoke to those nice guys at Talon again this morning.

I did mention the thread on the KTM forum regards buggered cush drives and high maintenance issues. Apparently the hubs have now been changed and have replaceable pins which are hard anodised, so shouldn't write the hub off if they wear.

Still not convinced so going to sit on the fence and monitor the thread on the ktm forum and see if it goes quiet.

Also looking at a non cush drive hub, which is currently sounding quite promising.
