I remeber reading somewhere before I bought my bike that the tank range on an 1100GS was about 250 miles. However my GS only seems to do about 280kms (170miles) between fill ups.

When owned a TZR250 I remember that there was a load of water in the tank that was occupying valuable space (it had either dripped in through the filler cap or somehow there was a problem with the breather pipe, I can't exactly remember)

the bike has a laser can so I guess I can expect the fuel consumption to drop a bit, but I was wondering if 170 miles is about right? Also, for roughly how long can you ride with the light on before it runs out completely?

Cheers for any help.

David

Every bike is individual as regards distance on the fuel light. Roughly speaking it's 50 miles. Strap a petrol can on and go for a ride till you run out, then you'll know.:)

I get about 170 miles per tank from my 1100.
If you can get another 50 from the light coming on until empty that would make 220.
A careful, sedate ride might get somewhere near the 250 mark but (a) I wanna go fast (b) I don't wanna end up pushin' it.

So 170 to the light is fine by me.

my 1100 does anywhere from 140 to 210 miles to the orange light coming on.

Depends on whether I can get away with it or not.

Interesting that you seem to get more kms out of yours Richie. Mine is a '95 and has the plastic tank, I heard this was larger, is that the same one that yours has?

Even with pure motorway work, I'm fairly sure that I would only get about 285-290 kms out of mine until the light and after that, who knows, might try the petrol can on the seat for a bit of a test to see how much is left in it after that, would like to find out before I have to find out the hard way!!

Also, when I'm filling up the tank I have noticed that I seem to be able to keep dribbling in a bit more petrol pretty much indefinitely after it seems full, is this what you guys who get more miles kms do? After about 3-4mins of dribbling I get bored and usually give up!!

Mine's a 1994, plastic tank, Laser pipe (with chip), and K&N. I can always, always get at least 300kms on a tank. Doesn't seem to matter whether it's motorway or twisties. Never pushed it beyond 330kms though, as I did once and got 21.9 litres in it..!! I think it's a 22 litre tank, so close...

Rabbitson, yes mines a plastic tank and I regularly get a little more than 24 litres into it when I fill it. I ride between 130 and 140 to get these results with about 40 km in town. For me its 4 times to Bruxelles with 10 km each time in the city. I have a few times run out whilst riding the last few miles to home but rocking the bike from side to side gets the last bit of petrol to the right hand side. Plus yes when I fill up i rock the bike a round and manage to get a fair bit more in. I'll have to make the mod of a few holes drilled in the filler neck to get the last litre

Thanks for your input guys, I will have try a bit harder to put more fuel in the tank at the petrol station then :)

Currently doing about 120 km per day between The Hague and Amsterdam, so will let the bike run on the light for a while to avoid more unecessary fuel stops (I am used to owning jap sport bikes which usually give about 30km (20 miles) max before konking out), joined the ANWB (like the AA) last week anyway, so if it all goes horribly pear shaped they'll be hearing from me!!

Cheers,

David
