Tap4ICEid stickers

Made by the folks at MEKEY these handy stickers contain a RFID chip so that a responder can read the unique url that leads to your ICE data by using a Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled phone.

Except that after populating my profile online I can't get either sticker to trigger a response on my iPhone. I know it works because I used applepay earlier today.

I've emailed them with the problem and await a response.

Anyone else use this product?

It's Apple's Fault

Just got this explanatory note from MEKEY

Thanks for your email and your order.


If an iphone6 is used then the first responder has to browse using safari and enter the code printed on the sticker. This is due to apple locking down the NFC chip. This is hoped to be changing quite soon as they are falling behind in NFC technology.

If Android, Microsoft, Blackberry are used then NFC can be used and the sticker can just be tapped to retrieve the emergency profile.

Something to remember is that in an emergency, its not going to be your phone thats accessing the system. At the moment about 85% of smartphones can access the system by tapping.

Nope, even if they have an rfid reader, which most dont, if you have one on a phone, you would have to be a fool to go round randomly reading rfid tags as they can introduce all sorts in to a system.
Almost all systems used by the responders dont have unrestricted access to the internet so unlikly to be able to access any web site and even if they do they would not take any notice about a casaulty based on information on a
web site.

Same goes for these ICE usb sticks, a complete waste of time, there is not one emergency service in the country or NHS trust that allows random usb sticks to be connected to their systems!!!

If you are that botherd use an SOS necklace or bracelet, that is about as high tech as anyone is going to get.

I'd be surprised to see Apple unlocking the NFC chip in a future iOS update. Since its primary purpose is to enable Apple Pay, I'd have thought they wouldn't be keen to do anything that might compromise the security of that.

Notwithstanding what I said above, it could probably be achieved by them placing your thumb on your iPhone's home button and it reading your fingerprint in exactly the same way that it functions to verify your identity when you use Apple Pay.
