Tenere Spokes

On the tenere forum there have been a lot of guys over the pond with broken and rusty spokes. Mine have been treated with ACF50 from new but whilst cleaning the bike today after doing some trails I found several loose spokes and one had come completely undone, the nipple gone and the spoke bent, this is on the back wheel. My bike is due for a service later in the week (hence the clean) so I phoned my dealer (who opens in Sunday and is shut on Monday) to see whether he could sort this. A call back , Yamaha do not sell individual spokes to it's £85 for a set. This happen to anybody else and where can I get individual spokes/nipples etc, or has anybody had stainless spokes and want to get rid of their original ones.......My bike is still under warranty 8,000 miles so will see what Yamaha has to say, just a bit of a bummer as I need to go away on it next weekend.

I will just get mine re-spoked with top quality stainless stuff by a specialist like Hagon if they ever start to fail / look tardy.

Rasher, I accept that I may have to get that done if the spokes get tatty but as this is a known and ongoing issue I was hoping that someone this side of the pond had consulted Yamaha on it.

I did give it a reasonable trail ride for a few hundred miles but I think the bike should be capable of this. My 1100gs has never had any spokes replaced in all the years I've had it. I'm hoping for some serious good will from Yamaha on this , so will keep you updated.

I believe that the design of spoked wheel Yamaha (and Triumph as well) use for some of their bikes just requires regular checks to make sure the spokes are tight. A quick tweak every few thousand miles should do it. Not sure if this is an "issue" as such, as I believe checking spoke tightness is part of routine maintenance.

Don't remember NicK Sanders saying about having to tighten any spokes in his 50,000 miles....... Checked mine a few hundred miles before this one got buggered (when I reinflated the tyres after the dirt) and then after a motorway blast had a spoke nipple gone. I'm not impressed but will see what the dealer says, and going to ring Hagon in the morning and see if they will sell me a few spares as opposed to a set.

I've got an 1100GS, CRF450 and a WR250 and even my horrible Armstrong has never had any broken spokes or multiple loose ones.

On the Superten forum there are plenty of tales of spoke issues and goodwill by Yamaha after them being reported to the US safety board so Yamaha are aware that it is at the very least a pain in the arse.

I'm wondering if applying ACF to the spokes leads to them working loose. The ACF is bound to interfere with the metallic bond between the spoke and wheel threads that holds them in place.

I rode a R1150GS for 11 years and never had spoke problems. They showed their age but to me it was a patina showing the bike's regular use. I much prefer a good honest bike that shows it has been used rather than some shiny, superficially enhanced, tart's handbag

That's a good point, I ACF'd them as it was apparent that there was a big problem with them rusting (unlike BMW, which I've only ever cleaned).

Yamaha will replace under warranty but only once during the 2 years according to my dealer, i bought the Hagon s/s spokes @ £170

My spokes look they came off a barn find bike, in a heap, pitted and discoloured
