You're right, take the back box off, disengage the TSC and stick in in "sport". Different bike.
Get an ECU Flash = VERY DIFFERENT BIKE!

On a recent 3000 mile European bimble, averaged well into the 50s mpg overall and into the 60s when wafting around the mountains....
This is after the ECUnleashed reflash, and I think that has improved things quite a lot.
Me too, the Unleashed Flash has picked up at least 2-3mpg in pretty much any conditions, at high speed it is quite poor, an indicated 90mph two-up fully loaded has it in the low 40's, but 80mph (about what I do on UK motorways) brings it up to around 50.
Mine only takes about 17L when the light comes on, I never trust the last litre to allow the bike to run, and assume perhaps if I spent another 5 minutes cocking around another litre may go in at fill up time, so take it as running a useable 21L from a "quick" to brim fill.
Many folks in the states have run them dry and confirm 50 miles on reserve is easy enough, I have done 30+ miles of steady riding on reserve and still only got 19.5L in the bike so reckon if you cruised at around 60mph you could eek 60 miles on reserve.
My tour gave me the following daily mpg's (from the computer which I reckon is about 4-5% on the happy side)
45 / 48 / 55 / 48 / 49 / 54 / 52 / 53 / 54 / 54 / 56 / 54 / 57 / 52 / 47
I rarely saw the fuel light (only on motorway days) as in the mountains you could get to 200 miles without the light coming on so would have loads of opportunities to fill up before running low.
The best (57) was on a run up and down part of the B500 in the Black Forest, now ruined by many 43mph zones (ridden at an indicated 60-65) and the average speed was 49mph on the run.
The days riding mountain passes all averaged mid-low 50's with average speeds barely above 30mph and rarely involved running above 4th gear.
The 45 was 8 hours of UK and French Motorways, 495 miles of which 450+ were motorway.
I would not think it would do better solo, as when two up I ride a bit smoother.
For a standard bike I would reckon 2-3mpg lower if ridden the same.
hooning around on faster local roads where I live will often bring it down to mid 40's and see the light on at around 165-175 miles, with an easy 40 in reserve.
