hello all,

this is my first post on this forum or on any forum for that matter!

i need opinions please on whether to spend around £1000 on the 1200gs' pannier system with the coded locks or actually best go for after market GIVI'S combination lock pannier system at around half the price.

the BMW'S systems looks the business, but is it justifiable paying nearly twice the price over the GIVI'S?

your pros and con, please!

Tiger cant comment on the 1200 or its cases. From what I have seen posted they have mixed reviews, as does almost everything. I would start from your own basic needs, short trips, long trips, rough terrain, two up etc.

Óbviously if you are planning a round the world trip with the missus I would imagine you could find more suitable panniers than the OEM BMW ones. If you are just looking for the occaisional weekend...

then you could refine your decision on the basis of price. The 1000 gbp you mention sounds very expensive.- normally dealers offer you cheaper cases if you buy the bike. for 1000 gbp you can have almost any set you want I would think. Including Jesses in the finish you prefer. To be honest if they are selling them at that price I would say two tears in a bucket and buy something else. That really is a lot of money. More than doble what I paid for my ttech cases.

Also if you are planning the occasional trip, you might not need cases at all if you go solo. An ortlieb wet bag/north face bag or even BMWs own Priscilla "Queen of the Desert" silver bag with sequin details would probably be a better option.

What do you need has to be the starting point.

My 1200GS panniers were £392 inc locks and VAT. Just the panniers - no top case.

£1k seems an awful lot even with a top case.

I was quoted £600 with top box  Still a lot of cash IMO then again I don`t "need" them ;)

I bought the top case for £187 with coded key and use an Ortlied 'sausage bag'. Perfect.
Unless you're going around the world, this works well without the cumbersome side cases!
The OEM BMW top box contains a clever mechanism which increases or reduces the volume of the top case by rotating an inner handle 180 degrees. :)

£187?

Bert , is that a one off price , or can you let on to where i can buy one for that ?

Bought mine from.....

Bought mine from BMW Battersea
You can arrange to have it fitted too, fairly straight forward aside that there are two 'half-moons' cust which need be made to accomodate support which screw into bike threads already there above tail light

Call a great Ozzie there called Ben!

Ive got the BMW set no complaints but the inner bags are not worth it they are rigid and difficult to get in at times. Not found any rain yet so not sure about water tightness
