There we were , sailing along her Majestys highway .
I suddenly got a thump in the Knee , It was dark , i got a real shock ,
I was thinkin , how could she hit me there , but no i didnt get a thump
off Billie , it was my Tank Panel blowin round to greet my knee , with a
£160 Thump. quick roadside Bodge ,and on my way , havin no time to
dillie dally ,

You get the Jist.

The Problem is on the earlier 1200 GS , they fastened the Tank panel
using a quick release Dzuz fastener , which on inspection had actually worn
just a Little , and failed , Result £160 bill for replacement parts
Side panel and alluminium panel .

Picture one shows the failed Fastener
Picture two shows the 50c repair item

Spot on Phillip

... I enjoyed a similar 'blow-out'. I was of course on a private road, so any allegations of 105Mph are entirely academic. Besides the evidential remains have long since been laundered :D

... My esteemed dealer installed your elegant and perfect 50c solution.

... I believe newer bikes have a different fastening, but I haven't looked closely to see what it is. I'm surprised that the older bikes with the plastic dzus-twist haven't had the metal panel fasteners installed as part of the dealer service schedule.

... If you still have the placcy originals you would be wise to invest a £1 and replace them :rob

funny that, coz at 3.25 this mornin I was just thinkin about that and where I could get something like those wee bits you show ??

I have to admit , these are off an 87 transit i have for breaking.
Not the Most elegant , but it works.

If you have an Earlier , GS , check whats holding you Tank panel
on and replace , dont run the risk for the sake of 50c

Tie strap

There is the other solution to this problem which also happened to me at high speed, that is to drill a small hole adjacent to the zus fastener and use a tie strap to lock it all.

This happened to me at about 70 mph with the result that the aluminium side panel bent slightly. Dealer told me it was a common problem and all damaged parts were replaced under warranty.

I found this while looking for something different .
I think its quite a useful piece and decided to bump it.

I could do with a handful of these but I don't know what they are called.

using a quick release Dzuz fastener ,

I think that when I did my apprenticeship in the aircraft industry (Saunders Roe - so that dates me) we used these fastenings on certain panels where quick release was important; however there was a strict rule -once undone they were ALWAYS replaced. Therefore I never touched the fastenings on my 2004 model (and had no trouble) but it was relief to find the panels held in place by 6mm torx screws on the 2008 model.

yep same thing happened to me on my 05 1200GS. Replaced under warranty with new style fasteners. No problems since. I was doing about 80mph at the time and right side panel flew back and thankfully I managed to stop, still holding onto it. Anyone with the earlier models should get the new fasteners for peace of mind.
