The Dolomites and Railsavers

Bloody good write up KMD, thanks very much, the pictures just make me want to leap on me bike and ride in to the distance! :moped: :D

Don’t know whether you’re finding about the Motor Rail service is typical, looks like British Rail in the 70’s, perhaps others will chime in and comment.

As a rule of thumb, continental trains (outside of the really smart intercity runs) are often very basic.

For all its faults British Rail's (or whatever it's now called) are not so bad. The OP mentioned the Trans-Siberian express, I did that across Russia in the late 70's / early 80's....great fun. There are two classes on Russian trains, 2nd and 9th.... with nothing in between :D

If memory serves, I think it was £580 for the train, return with an evening meal and breakfast. This was breakfast, nothing actually wrong with it, all fresh, just basic

Hull - Zeebrugge return this June for one bike, two persons was £281. Much easier than flogging the 300 miles down past Birmingham / London both ways on our wonderfull motorway network, then having to stay in a wonderful hotel in the UK before getting up nice and early to catch the train across the Channel.

GDay fella's

I have just read the write up by my Brother with interest - its a good job that he didnt post the picture of me in the cabin - seriously not impressed with the promises made to us and looking sadder than a seaside donkey. We did some bartering / wheeling and dealing both legs and the super train staff (bit like Virgin Atlantic cabin crew, young, energetic student types that were great fun) managed to blag us another cabin as you seriously could not get five guys and all of their kit into one of those 6 berth bunks - they really are like the old BR sliding door compartments with three fold down bunks either side.

Notwithstanding all of that, the riding was the dogs and I would recommend it to anyone. Take waterproofs as the Alpine conditions means it can rain at anytime (but didnt interupt our fun) and watch out for Lycra lout cyclists in the hills - mad as fish the lot of em......except the chicks, they were fit as a butchers dog and well worth getting stuck behind:augie

I am from down south, Reading area and I met up with the guys at Rotterdam after going Harwich / Hook. To save sitting around on the return leg, I went Dunkirk / Dover on the ferry. Distressed buy so they charged me 40 euros but saved an overnighter on the ferry

To the lads that went, Nick the plumber, long Dave, the King and the Fed-ex, cheers for a super trip - again....where to next year? (or maybe later this year if I can swing it past the obergruppenfuhrer)
