As I said I have the little 650GS (the new twin), think it's a cracking bike, know a few who have the 1200GSA, I couldn't see it as a first bike for most either. Does anyone know if he decided ?

Sometimes you forget there are ladies on this forum, and that some of them don't take offence with our/my uncouth language.
How anyone can suggest a 1200GSA as a first bike is behond me! A wonderful bike, no doubt, but a first bike, come on!
As for why BMW gave the 650 and 800 different power levels is, another story. I could fully understand the offroad 800 having less power, but not the road orientated 650. They should have brought out a 'road' 800, and an 'Adventure' 800, not this strange 650/800 thing. Having said that, with my trouser deficiency, it's obvious I could never buy a 650GS.
Let's face it, the 650 can only be for the little 'uns like me
Joking apart, spoken by a woman with a marketing background, it's for the little wives, if there was any way I could stretch to the 800 I'd have had one!
No lad is going to stay on a 650 once he's found his feet (if you'll excuse the pun)

Get something cheaper as your first bike. Drop it a few times and crash it, then get a decent bike.

i didn't. this was a recommended course of action by another biker, but it would've been a total waste of money for me. i put a deposit down on the 800 before it came out and took delivery of it as my first. suffice it to say, glad i didn't go down the cheap bike route with the intention of trading up in 12 months. buy what you want straight off the bat is my recommendation. just be careful in buying though, as i happened to get the right bike. however, at first i wondered if i should've gone for the adv. now if anything i'd go smaller and think about the x-challenge, realising that true dual purpose big bikes are a myth. most boys that ride adv's are pretty much exclusively on the road and like the pose value...i reckon.
