I always build a few rest days into a tour to see the sights. The mountains look completely different when you're up them

Totally agree..... I've done both but Jungfaujock is was a one off marvel of engineering and is a full day affair, especially if you stop at various mountain stations on the way back down to Lauterbrunnen but it is only worth it on a clear day, for me it was a one off, been there done that, didn't buy the T-shirt type of thing, however, I could never get bored of the Schilthorn on a clear day.

Breakfast deal is not bad at around £65.00

The 5 day passes and other options are a great way of trying out the trains, cable cars and gondolas in the region but they only cover you half price up the final sections of Jungfraujock and Schilthorn.

It looks like I`ll have to either suck up the cost on the day or give it a miss, but judging by the previous posts its definitely not a good idea to book in advance. I knew Switzerland was going to be expensive, but not THAT expensive.

I've been in that position years ago where I couldn't really afford a train or cable car trip in Switzerland.

I compromised by taking the trip but bunking off early from the campsite without paying

I've been to Geneva and Zurich before and found them no more expensive than any other major European city.

If you're at all interested in mountains I'd recommend reading the White Spider by Heinrich Harrer before you go. It will put everything into context when you look down from the viewing windows onto the North Face and think back to the history surrounding it. I've been on the railway a couple of times, once getting off at Eismeer to do the Mittellegi ridge and more recently to ski off to the Koncordia hut down the Aletsch glacier, and although it's interesting I much prefer cable cars like the Aiguille di Midi in Chamonix for "wow" factor and view per pound. If you're in Grindelwald anyway it would be a shame not to do it though.

the GA refered to is a yearly travel pass that costs CHF 3550 in cattle class and CHF 5800 for first class so doubt you need to read anything further that mentions the GA

spent many a happy hour in the cable car from Birg to the Schilthorn, well worth the trip and even more fun leaving via the fire escape to ski back down weather is everything though, you really need a clear day to appreciate the view.

To possibly get a bit more out of your day at the top, there is a track across the glacier to a mountain hut, offering food and drinks. Can't remember exactly, but no more than an hour each way and views are stunning.

Normal walking boots were fine for us. Take suncream and glasses as it will be v bright in summer.
