Hi , GS ADV 1150 05 twin spark - motor is running only on the secondary spark plugs only. I've installed new coils and spark plugs, but there's still no spark on the primary ones. Any suggestions, please?

Long Shot…….

Each of the stick coils have earths at the cylinder head. You can’t miss them, just follow the wiring loom back from the coil connection.

If you haven’t already done so it might be worth cleaning them.

I have done both of them still no sparks ..
Borrow a set of Known Good stick coils or Try them in someone else's bike

Verify they are good not before digging deeper

Why did you change the old ones out?

Did you pull on the cables to remove them ??

Do you have access to a Diagnostic system ?

Do you have one of these in your fuse box?

It’s only fitted on some bikes to provide additional voltage for the coils.

No extra relay
It seems obvious to change the coils when there's no spark coming. I did replace them with brand new ones, which are supposed to work. I'm expecting the issue to be somewhere else.

Well you see its like this! You are there, with the bike and all of us are hundreds of miles away

Being Psychic would be nice BUT we are not and asking questions is how we the audience and technical people reach for educated guesses to offer assistance

So my recommendation is Take a little time and answer what was asked AND try to sound a LOT less stroppy!

For Example ......The coils could have been corroded and that is why you changed them WE (The audience) have no fucking idea why you changed them!

New question Did you check the wires at the coil connectors in case some idiot pulled them to disconnect and there is a broken wire ???

you see where I am going with Diagnosis https://www.euromotoelectrics.com/product-p/scoilhar348.htm

I’ve always had one fitted to my bike, and was curious what it was for. According to the wiring diagram when the ignition is on, the relay is energised and puts battery positive voltage (Red) direct to the stick coils in addition to the normal voltage provided via the ignition switch (green).

So it’s probably there to compensate for voltage losses in the wiring during the start cycle.

How they worked out that some bikes needed it whilst others didn’t is beyond me.

I have no way of confirming, but I suspect that many twin spark bikes have the additional wiring installed for the extra relay, even if the relay itself is not fitted.

Easy way to check is to look at the relay base, if you can see wiring contacts there, then the wiring is present.

So if the wiring is there, just the addition of the relay might boost starting. Though if your bikes wiring is sound, many might not notice any difference.

Seeing as you’re in London take it to Steptoe and save yourself from a lot of trouble arsing about.

I would be interested in the outcome here Rob as I have the same problem. It just runs on two plugs..It started when I swapped out the ECU. So I took it to a guy who fixes older bikes and he plugged it in which said it was running 98degs while stone cold..havent got round to digging deeper yet but open to suggestions.

I’m hoping both the OP and you have checked the stick coil connector wiring for continuity.

There are 3 wires.
One goes to earth.
One goes to the motronic pins 32 (black/green) (left) and 33 (black/violet) (right) respectively.
One goes to green (ignition on).

Not for nothing do BMW supply a repair harness for the stick coils.
Under part No
