The technology for effective noise cancellation has been applied to headphones for use in noisy cockpit situations (rotary wing etc) and more recently for Hi-Fi buffs as well. It works very well...... according to both groups of users that I have talked with.

Now Sony have brought out a version that seems OK to use in a M/C helmet.

10db of NR doesn't sound much but as it is a logarithmic scale that would actually equate to a quite a hefty hike in perceived "quiet".

Anybody got the wonga to splodge out on a pair and report back?

Er? How much? $199 in USA or the same in Euros in Germany....not seen them in UK yet.

I thought about these and had a look-see at a local Sony store a while back, but concluded that:

1) the earpieces are quite long and would stick into the insides of your helmet when you put your helmet on
2) it'd be difficult to find a good spot to put the microphone bit that does the noise sensing - you'd need to tuck it in your helmet somewhere, but no near your mouth otherwise it'd cancel out your own voice
3) it's battery powered so they'd run out

I'm after some ulitmate ear custom earplugs with inbuilt speakers which will do a better job more cheaply, and you can use them on a plane, train etc as well as on the bike.

£119 inc VAT at www.sonystyle-europe.com - click UK --> Portable Audio --> Headphones.

Anyone want a pair at £69 inc VAT? I have a £50 off voucher for this website that I earned as a result of a hotel frequent stay promotion. No good to me as I don't need anything from Sony.

First refusal to Boundless as he seems to want the headphones.

Mike

I've not seen those, but have bought a pair of these.....

When I get into my 'New' workshop, I intend to pick them open to see if I can somehow incorporate them into some Custom Made units.

As they are, the housing is far to big for inside a Helmet, it appears the new version is going to be the same...shame, but if I can make a go of it, I'll post here...

They only use one AAA battery so it should last a while and as they are so small, carrying a couple with you on a trip should be no big deal.........

Oh, and Mike, if Boundless doesn't need your Voucher, can I avail myself, purely in the interests of research you understand...:D

Pass on the voucher...

...but thanks anyway for the part-of-the-furniture-isation offer.

I'm arranging my wagons in wonga splodge minimum pattern this month as some of my investments sailed back in all smelly and scratched.

Looks like there would be a crispy pay back coming for anyone up and running soon with a satisfactory battery-free powered helmet/Bluetooth/ Software Defined Radio /auditory canal/throat-mike interface.

What say a photo-voltaic hemet shell coating backed up with a couple of nano-windturbine generators each side in the brow vents for back up in the dark?

Tobers....are you listening?

...or are you back there testing that you can hear yourself talking to yourself again? :)

Photo-voltaic helmet shell? Right - I'm onto it once I've finished my regenerative power boot soles (small rollers on the bottom to run along the road and charge up all your accessories).

Checking your avatar again Tobers...all you'd really need would be a nice Seiko Kinetic self winding movement screwed right onto your skull.

Just give us the nod.

me please....:D :D :D :D

Since I seem to have been out of luck with the voucher:( :(

Does anyone know where I can get a good price on these Sony headphones?

I’ve been searching for about 2 months now. Ebay have sets but a lot of them are from Hong Kong so I don't like to buy from that distance and get caught for import duty or whatever.

And the ones that are from here are getting' into a bidding war and putting the price too high for something with no guarantee.

any ideas there folks

I bought a pair of Panasonic RP-HC70 noise canceling headphone a year ago and have been very pleased with them. The reduction in ambient noise is excelent.

Only about £30 in a Dixons duty free shop at the airport.

A set of two AAA batteries will last for the whole of a 9 hour flight.

I'm considering cannibalising them to fit in my helmet.

Speaker unit pops out of the frame as per photo.

The blue plastic trim comes off too making it even smaller.

:)
