I am setting out at the end of the month for Banjul in the Gambia on my R100GS. Anyone done Morocco/Mauritania/Senegal trip before ? What's the cross border convoy like between Morocco & Mauitania ? I've got a month - not sure whether to ride one way & ship back or try to do the return joureny aswell. Any views ?

Are their any approved BMW dealers on route ? - probably a bit too much to ask..

Try Joe's sukuta camp in Banjul. It's close to the embassy of Mauretania.

Hi,

The dealer mentioned in Casablanca does have bikes and bike mechanics and were helpful when I called in there in October.

The border between Morocco and Mauritania is rock and sand for about 4 kilometres but is easy to follow. Just keep left after the Moroccan barrier. There are some guides about but you don't need them.

The roads in Mauritania - fine until Nouakchott then gets a bit rough the nearer you get to Rosso. Don't make the mistake I made. Avoid Rosso like the plague and use the Djama crossing. 90 kilometres of piste but worth it. Anyway the road between Rosso and St. Louis is rough in parts. Roads in Senegal mostly ok but always watch out for that pothole. They appear anywhere. The road south from the Gambian border to Barra and Rosso pretty rough but at least it exists unlike the road east, south of the R. Gambia to Basse Sante Su which is mostly piste.

It depends on what you want. Getting there and back in 4 weeks will see you in the saddle most of the time. I took 8 weeks and covered 10,000 miles but then I wasn't in a rush.
