6th
After getting in at about 2100 last night, I had a shower and headed for the bar next door – apparently, I wasn’t the first UKGSer who Jesse, the Australian barmaid, had met…
…but she served up an excellent pint (or so) of ‘Honey Lager’. I ordered dinner by closing my eyes an pointing randomly at the menu, ending up with a very tasty Chicken Linguine. I was soon joined by Chris (?), Cathy and their daughter Becky (I did write their names down, but with my usual organisational skills, immediately lost the note…). They’re travelling towards Vancouver Island on holiday, but are soon embarking on a tour of Australia, with a similar lack of planning that has characterised my trip. Becky will continue her schooling by internet…
It’s time for bed – I’m knackered.
I wake the following morning to find that it has rained heavily overnight (the Adv needed a wash anyway ). I’m packed and on the road in time to meet up with Molly at 0900. I remove the plug from the other cylinder and, leaving Molly to guard my toolkit, go searching for a drain plug to fit. It takes just under an hour before I find that there isn’t one in Whistler. However, I’ve found a machine shop that are willing to make one, when the boss gets back in a couple of hours time*. I return the plug and phone number to Molly and, after exchanging email addresses, I’m on my way south…
Highway 1, here called the Sea to Sky Highway, is being worked on. Here the crew is blasting the rockface above the road and then clearing the debris. The road is closed for hours at a time (it as open from 1000 to 1300 today, hence my rapid departure from Whistler and its attractions ).
Koksilah River is looking particularly attractive. A local is commuting out of Squamish…
Soon, Howe Sound comes into view…
…and I know I’m nearly in Vancouver.
I stop, relatively early, in North Vancouver at the Holiday Inn Express. I unpack, put my laundry in the machine, then look around for the internet connection…
‘Oh, we don’t have it’.
‘But the first thing I asked was whether you had High Speed Internet & you said yes…’
‘Did I? I must’ve misunderstood…’
I wait until my laundry has finished, then re-pack and leave. In the meantime I’ve made a reservation at the Econolodge at Surrey, to the south of Vancouver. To get there, you get to cross this very impressive suspension bridge…
I arrive and, having been caught this way once before , try out the connection – which doesn’t work…
I move rooms to find a connection that does and, 4hrs after first stopping, unpack…
I plan to be here for at least 2 nights, as I’m going to spend some time off the bike – who knows, I might even wash it…
*EDIT - Just heard from Molly - she's back on the road after Protech made her a new plug
