I have a late 2008 GSA and after the first 600miles started to get black soot all over the pannier next to the tail pipe...took it to the dealers twice and they said they had sorted it out.
After that the bad weather came so no way to really try it out until yesterday when took the bike for a few miles just to run it over winter.
On returning to my garage i kept the bike runnning at about 2000rpm and noticed after about 15 secs the left side pipe from the engine was glowing red hot the right was ok...so switched it off and left it
any indeas thanks Stewart

Sounds like the bike has a fueling problem. I would give the dealer another chance to sort it, if he can't get it to another BMW dealer.
PS. The pipes will glow if you run it for a while with no cool air blowing over them so be aware.

belive it or not its the right hand side that has the problem. Both headers on my 09 glow red after a very short time idling. You can only really see it in the dark or low light. I would think the right hand side is over fuelling so running cooler and also causing smoke/soot that you are describing. Possibly a faulty injector?

I'd agree with the above that it's the right that's more likely at fault here. Out in daylight it's not so easy to see, but both headers will be glowing a dull red in normal use. Inside it will show up, so it sounds like your right hand side one is running rich, which is where the soot is coming from.

Idling at 2000 rpm:

The bikes idle should be controlled when on the throttle stops by the ecu altering the idle stepper motors. Either your bike isn't on the throttle stop (fully closed) or the ecu is driving the steppers wrongly. Typical idle is 1100-1200 rpm.

The idle steppers can be recalibrated easily with a GS911 device, or by your dealer using a GT1 diagnostic computer.

I would suspect it is more likely that you have a problem with the throttle mechanism not fully closing on one side, perhaps the cable from the splittler box under the fuel tank is getting trapped or has come off its cam pulley inside the splitter box??
