Lots of bods ask for ideas for a long-weekend or bank holiday jaunt, starting and ending in Calais.

This works well, especially if you can travel over to France in the late afternoon the evening before, meaning that you can make a reasonably civilised 09:00 start on the first day. This will enable you to reduce any motorway time to zero, too.

The two alternative routes at the start bring in some motorway. Useful perhaps if you have to start from Calais, having caught the ferry or train across to France that morning. To give people an idea of the timings for each day's ride, I have included some separate notes.

Do you have to use the same hotels? No, of course not. The route could start just as happily in St Omer, from the Ibis in the centre and finish just as well at the Ibis in Dijon city centre. Mix'n'match to your heart's content.

PS It goes nowhere near the Millau bridge (sorry)

It's a lovely region. I used the Ibis in the centre of Beaune as a base when I had a few days there. Great to pick a route around familiar wine appellations, "drunk that, and that, must try that, drunk that etc, as you pass through"

PS It goes nowhere near the Millau bridge (sorry)

What about the Millau viaduct?
