In both Norway and Sweden the road authorities maintain databases of all roads, including info on surface. This info can be found in a map tool.

The downside: Local language only. But some 4WD-guys have made an instruction video to the Norwegian site at least, you can give it a try: http://mash.as/grusvei/film.htm

Knut and I was there in 2007.
It was raining, foggy, so we couldn't se how steep it was. I believe that was a benefit!
