Who ever invited the fixings for these side panels sure bo shot.

There is me riding alot minding my own business around 85 mph, and what should happen that bottom fixing comes undone and the whole panel folds back on me. Bad enough that this can happen but at speed its like an air brake on one side of the bike seriously scary moment.

So all you GS12 owners out there my advice would be an immediate mod and add a small cable tie to that bottom fixing so even if it does come undone it can not fly back.

The panel is now damaged at the top fixing as well as the silver ally panel that it is attached to, wonder where this is covered by the warranty :nono

Yup, been there, done that............

You don't have a Baglux tank cover fitted by any chance ???? i think I can just see one in pic 2. Mine did it on return from the dealers when they hadn't refitted it properly. They have modded it with a cable tie to prevent it happenning again as the Baglux cover causes excess stress on the big plastic Dzus clip under the leading edge.

Mike think stick with the cable tie, I did think of fixing stainless Bolt and butterfyl nut for ease but worried about in working loose.

If you were to fix with cable ties, could you tell me where they are located. Pictures would be good. Ta.

Mouse I think it is Pukmeister has suggested the baglux cover probably makes things worse. Also I think going off-road does not help all that bouncing around. IMHO I don't think it is the best thought out fitting on the bike to easy to get it wrong.

Swooper I have done my Mod fairly straight forward drilled a hole just above the normal fixing hole on the panel itself and feed the tie though the metal fitting on the bike itself see picture (apologises for poor quaility):-

Happened to me too. Warranty did not cover it. BMW claimed that the fixings are fool proof and I must have tampered with it.
True enough but still a terrible attitude on their part :spitfire

Well,I guess I solved that issue once for all,in a nice looking maner.
I used a "M6 flat head" srew,40 mm long,two

stainless steel washer wich a made a "taraudage" (to tap?in english)in the first one, like inside a bolt, dont need to be verry effective ,as its only for supporting the screw before you put the hand bolt at the end(sorry its a bit confused, but look at the pictures for anderstanding)

After that, take off all the pieces in the side panel, just keep one rubber washer, put the scew inside the panel, then the tap washer, tight with the fingers, then pass through the support, add the rubber washer, plus the steel washer(this one doasnt need to be tap)and finaly a hand bolt.dont even need to be strongly tightened, because the rubber is a bit crushed, keeps some pressure on it.All this in order. It s verry simple, but sorry, its just the way I try to explane that looks sh...y.

Well,I drove over 5000 km since I made this attachment, and no issue. It did not move a mm,as I was afraid at the begenin because of the vibrations.but nothing to report.and its easy to remove with no tools.

A+ Pogo

:thumb Good solution Pogo at least with yours the "mechanics" when taking your side panels off will not forget to replace the cable ties. Think I will look into doing the same . Cheers :thumb
