Three faults in one?

hi guys here's a good one for you. On my normal 10 mile commute to work today in london my f650gs developed three faults at the same moment while stopped at lights. The abs light came on, the speedo stopped working, and the idle rev count has dropped to 1000 almost cutting out when at rest. Is it coincidence or has anyone any idea what might cause this to happen at the same time?

Hi Tony,

well if it was an R1200GS I'd say ABS Pump.

As a previous F650GS owner can I suggest that you check the battery terminals before anything else, as mine used to throw a wobbler when it was loose!

it looked promising seeing the same response on 2 different forums, however, i tried the battery terminals and although both took a tiny turn with the screwdriver the 3 problems still remain. i noticed that when i start the engine, the mileometer actually moves to maybe 10mph then 20 or 30 before settling at zero, then when i take off it remains at zero. Also. the light on the dial is on, and the led display for miles ridden is displayed though now its frozen. Looks like i will have to procure myself the famous cd rom (no manual available yet in book form right?) Will also browse the faq, and if that fails back to the dealer on monday as I have had the bike a couple of weeks only though i think the 3 month guarantee is engine and gearbox only.

Tony tony,
symptoms could be a water logged sensor.
Happened on my non ABS Dakar (speedo crazy but mostly zero).
Was it raining when the problem occured?
Try drying out the rear sensor somewhere warm overnight.
The 650 has a higher tickover at speeds above 5mph (or so) - as yours is registering 0mph you've got the low tickover.
It could just be incorrect spacing for the sensor.

hi guys well here's the update so far. Having worked all weekend i have had time only to check the battery terminals, the fuses, and have a cursory look at the sensors. The night befor the problem arose i did ride in some heavy rain, however the faults remain. I start work late today, 4pm and will spend the next couple of hours stripping down the bike and having a good look and going through the things i have learned here and in the faq.
failing that its back to the dealer who opens again tomorrow

And the verdict is- back to the dealer today who concluded it is indeed the abs/speedo sensor on the rear wheel. New one ordered and will be fitted by the end of the week. I pay for the sensor but no labour charge. He also did me a good deal on a new seat, my standard one plus £40 for a high seat, and what a difference to the ride, rider and bike feel as one now.

well folks the plot thickens
the dealer i bought the bike from fitted the new abs/speedo sensor on the rear wheel and took it for a test ride but wasn't happy on his return. The fault is still there, though intermittent, so on wednesday he is having my bike for the day and taking it to BMW themselves for some testing, he added that its no charge to me as i have been getting the run around a bit which is decent of him. For the day i get to borrow an 850 of some sort which could be interesting. Conclusion to follow.

the conclusion for sure now
so apparently in 2001 there were 2 types of abs sensor, one made prior to june, and one after, buy installing the other type now everything seems to be hunky dory
roll on some good weather so i can experience riding in the warm for the first time
