Ticking noise from cockpit area

Hi all
I have a 63 plate TE and have been riding it since February. In the last few weeks i've noticed a tickety noise from the handlebar AREA COMING UP FROM THE GAP (edit), almost a tappety sound. Often heard when the engine is cruising around 3000 rpm but goes or is drowned out as revs climb. It might be normal but once heard it's difficult to unhear!

Anyone able to put my mind at rest?

Seriously...

First time I test-rode an LC 1200 was on an 'R'. I took it back and said I thought it was pinking on a light throttle about that engine speed. Both my GSs have done it, the noise going as soon as it's given some throttle load. At tickover, my mechanic's stethoscope says it's the injectors making the most ticking noise.
