Sorry to raise this subject again .... but ....

I have an '03 1150 GSA

At mid throttle and mid revs I have a ticking.

No ticking at idle
Pull clutch, ticking stops as engine revs drop
More throttle ticking goes
Less throttle ticking goes
More revs ticking goes
Less revs ticking goes
I think (but not sure) it gets worse as engine heats up

Is it another one for me to stop whining about and ride the bike? ;)

I've taken the LHS cam chain tensioner out and it looks quite worn to me.

What do you all think?

Replace RHS too?
Replace spring bold and tensioner or just tensioner?
Does anyone know anything about a BMW "upgrade" for the tensioner?

Thanks in advance.

I have not heard or read of any upgrade on the right side tensioner, but if theres visible wear then it cannot do any harm to replace it, have you got the upgraded tensioner fitted to the left side?

from what you describe it sounds like the injectors, mine does it.i just ignore it.

I don't know what the upgrade is or how you tell, I've just seen a couple of references to it.

Have you tried anything like STP Fuel Injector Cleaner Petrol?

I'd really like to stop it if I can.

What's the general view, injectors or cam chain tensioner? Bet I pick the wrong one to fix!

i think its the normal noise made by the injectors switching on and off.

The left side tensioner i think is mainly noticed on start up.

The Boxer engine is quite rattly/tappy and noisy even when it is completely healthy.
It can be more noticeable on a naked bike such as the GS due to the lack of fairings.

change the l/h tensioner and then set the tappets and the end float on the rockers finally balance the intakes then take it for a ride if it still ticks then further looking at is required the above worked on mine until the l/h intake butterfly started ticking

Another thing to look at while looking for the dreaded ticking is cable slack, make sire this is as small as you can make it :thumb2
