Hello

If I want to change the timming from 6 to 8 degrees were will be the marking on the flywheel window?

Any good reference?

"Twin Plug? "

yes...

I have a question: why to advance from 6 - 8 degrees the static timing? it goes on the opposite direction that I would be expecting...

not in idle the advance will go from a max of 36 degrees to 25 degrees with twin plug. this I can understand...

There's an article on gun smoke that describes why you need to change the timing. It's very difficult to get it right the easiest and cheapest solution is to fit the Boyer twin spark unit into your bean can.
http://www.gunsmoke.com/motorcycling/r100gs/dual_plug/

It does suggest in the article to set the ignition timing to the s mark once your engines ticking over.

Hi

Some time ago I asked Boyer:

"I understand that you have produced an ignition with an advance curve suitable for twin-plugged BMW 2V twins. I have a 1993 BMW R100GS with twin-plugs and would be interested in any information that you have on this"

And received the reply:

"Thank you for your enquiry but I'm afraid we only deal with BMW’s from 1980 and earlier."

I must have got the wrong person on the wrong day! Any chance you could give me a pointer as to what I should ask for and I'll try again?

Thanks

Sean

The 1979/80 airheads had a bean can but instead of a hall sensor it was fitted with points. If you look at boyers website they sell an setup for this. The points and electronics cans are the same once they've been stripped out.

Roger Chaterton fitted one a few months ago and posted a write up.

if you read the top off the instruction sheet it clearly says they also fit the later models. This isn't the kit you need though. The twin plug ignition will have a different part number.

hello

thks for the comments

I have a Silent Hektik kit so will I "just" have to adjust the static timing and then chose the best advancing curve.

in the beginning I will put it on the 8 degrees and will use the curve number 2 (27 degrees @ 4800 rps)
after I will have to adjust carbs (any suggestion on the needle and jetting?) I have std bing carbs 40mm

I've been informed that each tooth on the flywheel is 3 1/2 degrees.

id try the standard jetting to start with and then take it from there.

The points and electronic beancans are different-
The points can has 2 screws holding the points plate, and the
electronic beancan has 3 screws securing the
sensor plate.
The BB Micro Digital system needs a beancan
with 2 holes to secure their stator plate. You could
use a 3 hole beancan but holes are in the
wrong places and it would be tricky to drill new
holes accurately.
I have a spare cannibalised electronic bean can
Surplus if anyone needs one, for a very modest price of course!

It's been a while since I fitted one Roger. The last one was a electronic bean can but I cannot remember the in and outs of fitting it.
