My 1150GSA is sounding like a million mile sewing machine and is making what I take to be 'warning' noises from the left cylinder. It's got just over 100k on now and I've been chasing this noise for a couple of weeks.
The noise sounds to me like the cam chain. Sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it's not, and sometimes it sounds like running matalic water! What it is NOT is constant unfortunately. Sometimes 60-70 in top is fine, often I hear it 'complaining' quite vigorously. It does sound a bit 'tappy' but not tappety if that makes sense. It's always quiet when cold and warming up and sounds lovely.
Started with the usual. Cam chain tensioner. I replaced it at about 30k with a new one I'm sure I was told was an upgrade but which now turns out wasn't (unless they've changed twice). I bought a new upgraded one with the sealed one piece piston/spring arrangement and put that on - no difference - maybe worse even. It didn't seem to put as much tension in as the old one - least it wasn't such a b'stard to fit as I hardly had to press down to catch the thread. I hope there is only one upgrade and that I've got the right one...
So last night I adjusted the valves - they were all very close anyway and it's made sod all difference today.
So, question is, does the cam chain stretch? My R1100S has over 170K on with no problems. If it does, is it a simple change. Can I split it, connect it to the new then rotate the engine/chain round and then connect the ends of the new (sounds simple - should only take a couple of minutes
) or could it be something else? Low/eratic oil pressure on the left? The offside is all fine which just leads me back to the tensioner on the left.
When it's quiet it all sounds lovely and tight. No chuffing or other regular warning noises. Its just when it's warm. I just dunno
