Continuing to work on the missus's Dakar and I've decided that I'm going to drop out the entire engine and re-paint it rather than just remove the generator/clutch covers and repaint those as the rest of the engine is flaking paint badly.

Any hints and tips for doing this? Looked through the Haynes manual at removing the engine and it seems pretty straight forward: empty the fluids then keep taking bits off until is drops out!

Guess I'll then just block up and passages/holes and mask a few bits, see if I can get it soda-blasted, then etch-prime and paint in a suitable heat resistant paint.

Any other ideas/tips/suggestions - perhaps for doing a decent prep job if I can't easily get it blasted?

Thanks!

your choice, but i wouldnt have a motor blasted intact.with any type of blast material.
i have achieved really good results with a small air powered DA sander and plenty of elbow grease.(all appertures masked first)
then spray painted with smoothrite, the silver is a good match for the original bmw colour.
or the black gives a really deep gloss, once cured it is very durable.:thumby:
