Are the TKC 80s any cheaper in the UK then they are in Germany? If so please post a cost and location with contact info.

I'm having a heck of a time finding anything under Euro 350 for a set for my 1200GS.

Thanks,

JQ

Based on today's euro rate for tourists of 1.387, I pay €175 ride-in ride-out for a pair of TKC80 for my R1150GS. That is a very cheap supplier (F&B tyres in Sandbach) but it is 250km away.

If I go more local (15km) I will pay €200 fitted to loose wheels with an extra charge of €14 for ride-in ride-out.

Vern (from this forum) is currently offering a tyre-only deal of 2 x rear and 1 x front for €235. At that price you should come over here in your car and buy a few sets.

regards,

Mike

That's a ridiculous price..do you live in a really posh area or is Germany just really expensive for tyres???

I got a pair of Anakees fitted in the South of France, near the harbour in Nice (so a bloody expensive place  ) and the ride in cost was only 260 euros (a year ago fair enough)

For the money you're talking about, it'd be cheaper to ride over here, have one of us put you up overnight, and after the customary exchange of copious alcoholic libation and a night talking bollix, get some knobblies fitted then ride back :D

$195 - how did you work out that price?

I looked on the website and the two tyres come to $211 then you are looking at $106 shipping using USPS (a pair of TKC80s packed for shipping weighs nearly 15Kg). Add on import duty (4.5%), German TVA at 16% and you are looking at a landed cost in Germany of €295. Then you probably need to add on at least €20 customs handling fee (maybe even double that)

I do hope that you haven't ordered them because you could be in for a nasty shock.

I'm US military stationed in Germany, so the merchant only has to ship to NY. The military postal system (MPS) ships the rest of the way for free. This is not as great as it sounds though as most companies will not ship to MPS (APO/FPO) as there is no way to track the package once its in military control so its basically uninsurable...

I just happened to get lucky and find a company that carries TKCs and would ship to MPS. However, I don't have them yet so I'm not going to start celebrating yet:rolleyes:

EDIT-Forgot to mention, the Status of Forces Agreement exempts us from all the German taxes and customs. One of the few good deals left to US servicemembers...unless you count the all expenses paid free trip to Iraq. All you have to do is ask and you'll be on the next plane

Nice scam! :D

Scam? Hardly.

Your blokes get the same when they're stationed in Germany. Not sure how the UK side taxes but NATO forces are generally exempt from paying the VAT of other NATO countries.

Like I said though, its not as great a deal as you might think as so many retailers are suspect of the military postal system you can rarely find a participating retailer that has what you want. Plus if it gets lost in the post you basically eat it...

But when it does work its at a considerable cost savings.
