Well, what to do, have purchased a 2010 F650GS (against my will, trying to be sensible for once), and..having ridden it for about 1500 miles..it feels a bit bland and not very powerful for an 800cc bike.

What do people feel about the difference between the F650GS and F800GS engine? Am sorely tempted to swap..as I wanted the 800 in the first place. what is the received wisdom on this..anyone done it and been disappointed?..anyone going the other way:confused:?

Dan.

Done deal?

I think you have already made your mind up Dan:augie ,and the longer you leave it,the more its going to cost  I would however make sure your dealer lets you have a good long test ride on a 800 before you sign on the dotted, and perhaps even wait until you can throw a leg over the upcoming Triumph 800 dualsport to compare.

Agreed The 800 is a great bike ,good power and above all FUN .If you dont want a 1200 Do it , or as above wait for the new Tiger :thumb2

Hi Dan, strictly talking new bikes......
I would agree with most of the above take your time if you can test ride and I mean a good ride over an hour if you can :thumb2 personaly my f650-8 suits all my needs and wants but I have spent 4k + to personalise it to what I want. Personaly the 8 to me did not feel that much wow enough to draw me side ways to it. even though most of my mods would bolt to the 8 it has to many similarities :thumb2 if swmbo was into bike as in just pillion, no doubt I would have a 12. well planted all that torque yes please.

But the 8 is rising in ride review eyes maybey thats why Triumph gone for it listening to all our gripes here, (screen, seat, etc) and adressed it all in a Tiger 8 that will obviously out power the f800gs. In counless magazines they they are pitting the 8 or 12 against an aledged worthy contender, Maybey a grand unveiling at this Novembers NEC for the Tiger 8:thumb

Best of Luck in your choice what ever you choose :beerjug: take your time :thumb2

Replies much appreciated guys. I think I'll go for a nice long drive on the F8 and the KTM990 and make a decision then. It may be just to live with the F650 for a year, but I doubt it..anyway the sensible thing to do is not rush into it..

but then again..sensible is not my middle name! Gut instinct usually wins.

Hi Dandini,

I test rode the F650 and F800 back to back....The F800GS won hands down, grunt, pull, noise...the works and its got twin front discs and upsidedown forks...all the reports printed, rave abouts its versatility...and they are right.

Dan, if you really want to get yer debit card atrembling, and you have long legs, take a KTK 990`R` adv out for a afternoon:eek: I did,and I stiil have disturbing dreams of world domination :ronno (discounted nearly 2grand this month too):thumb

Forget BHP, it's torque that's important for acceleration and especially low-down torque for easy pulling. If you are disappointed with the F650GS you won't be happy with the F800GS either as there's really not that much difference. If you value the narrow 21-in front tyre and improved ground clearance for offroading, then fair enough, make the change, but performance wise don't bother.

As Skon and Puma point out, the Tiger 800 looks to be more your bike, but after my experience with the F650GS twin I would never ever again buy a new bike within 12 months of launch. Too many teething problems (gee, thanks, BMW) and the third-party suppliers aren't geared up with accessories--protection, luggage, etc.
