Tell your mate to get a map and watch the weather forecasts.

ViaMichelin will plot him a route, avoiding all tolls (also cutting out the Swiss motorway carnet, if he is desperate) in under five seconds. It won't help him with the weather, though. For that he needs to consult a higher authority.

Higher authority here....

What is the weather like in March?

How long is a piece of string?

When is he planning to go in March? One part of the month is nearly February, while another part is nearly April.

The motorways will by-and-large all be open, unless it snows like buggery. 10's of thousands of people live and work across the area. They do not hibernate in snow holes from November to May, though how keen some of them are to tool about on a motorcycle, avoiding toll roads, is a different matter.

We went toll motorway all the way, London to Milan in mid / late March, in one hit. Flecks of snow into Switzerland and Italy. Had we left a day or so later we would not have got much further south than Dijon as the snow descended.

Tell your mate to consult Weather underground for historic data.
