To Zumo or Tomtom

John

What are your main concerns about your particular unit? I was going to offer to buy it if James was not interested but was discouraged after reading the TTR issues on another thread

TBH my main concern was it falling out of the cradle once, and then the thing let me down on a trip to France. This was down to the SD Card being corrupted. Sent it back to TomTom, who initially tried to get out of it but eventually capitulated. To be fair the card was back within ten days, picked up from my house (by bloody great van:eek: ) and delivered back on same van. The other concern I had was regarding arcing caused by the loose cradle, but now have one of Steve's retaining straps so should be okay.

Made up my mind however to get a Zumo and stick two fingers up to TomTom.

If you want to try it out first, you are more than welcome, and if you are subsequently happy with it, I'd like to donate the £100 to the John Trickett Air Ambulance fund.

I bought my TTR in Feb last year, since then there have been a few snags. I am now on my 3rd or 4th Bracket!!:spitfire All replace under the TT warranty, albeit had a fight with Customer Services for a while.:nono

Then one of the main unit pins wore down, I guess from constant movement with in the bracket. Again this was sorted by the warranty. Finally, and bizarrely, whilst a friend and I were riding past a garage in Austria (I think) :nenau both our GPS's tripped off at the same time!! (His Garmin). The Garmin recovered. TTR, was fried. It did not recognise the SD card!! Not TTs fault I guess but I think Garmin is better suited when the Nuclear Armageddon EMP hits us!!!:clap :clap

As for car mounts, I've just used the plethora of right angle sticky backed mounts I have spare. 1st in car, 2nd on Bicycle, 3rd on toilet, 4th ...........

However we soldier on....

Any news of any East Europe mapping coming this way? As I'm off on my solo Baltic tour in July!!

Just wanted to publically say thanks to JDH for the generous donation of his Tomtom Rider unit to the John Trickett (Sherpa) Air Ambulance fund.

Now sold on to a needy GS owner, and the proceeds donated in memory of Sherpa.

Cheers JDH, top man. :thumb

TTR

OK.
Had a TTR last march and started to have charging problems after 2 weeks of being fitted to the bike!
First showed up on day 3 of a 2 week holiday so was quite pi**ed off especially as it's sold as a "rugged" unit blah blah.
The cradle didn't hold it properly and caused arcing on the power connections.
Also the unit switches to ride mode which only allows certain features to be used when moving.
You need to charge the earpiece with the mains or a ciggarete charger and you cannot use it whilst it is being charged so if you are camping re-charging the ear piece might cause grief.
The blue tooth earpiece unit is a little intermittent sometimes but I started using it with no sound anyway and got on pretty well without getting distracting voice prompts whilst riding quite well.
Had to make an additional strap to hold the TTR in the cradle to allow charging.
The maps work well enough but you don't get free updated to them.
So, it got stolen from the bike at a petrol station a few days back and I intend to buy a zumo as a replacement!
Cheers.
Dave.
