Toll to be introduced to use the Stelvio

Hoorah, I used the Zeinisjoch pass today. A refreshing 11 eurooooooo. As it was lashing with rain and about 7c I asked for a discount but none was forthcoming. Still, never mind, it keeps the riff-raff away.

Better still and quite empty were the (excellent) Faschinajoch and Furkajoch
passes which were at a heady 3c at the top and snowing. Empty that is except for cows being driven down to the lower pastures, leaving their copious amounts of lunch behind. Never mind, they are still free.

PS Yesterday it was a scorchio 30c. Mountains, you just can't trust 'em.

PPS The Arlbergtunnel is more euroooooooo..... On top of the motorway vignette you have already bought. Bleedin' liberty!

oh stuff this.. wht dont we all stay at home and go to the lakes and ride all day up and down the hardknott then we can all call that crap and then it can be tolled:beer:.a pass is a pass is a pass, some go up some go down the whole idea is to get out and around.(yes i am a poet):friday.:aidan

Whoooo hooooooo, 12 euroooooo for the Timmelsjoch, with snow, wind and minus three Celcius thrown in for naught. Bargain :thumb2

Jaufenpass, Brenner and Kul-taisattel pass all similarly challenging on the mercury front.

Perfect Stelvio weather today. 4.5C at the top, coming up the tight way..... A light dusting of snow over everything and bright blue sky....And all for FREE (get it while you can). Roads largely empty..... Which was why we came.

Down in the valleys it was anywhere between ten and 18 degrees, so just about right. Cracked off the Passo di Foscagno, Forcola di Livigno, Berninapas, Julien, Fluelapass and the Peschenpass, too. The stretch between the Stelvio, via St Moritz, Davos, Ardez, Landeck is excellent.

Big day tomorrow...... 10 passes and 360 odd miles.... New tyres fitted......

Loved the Fluella Pass, and the Bernina was nice on the sportsbike as it flows very nicely - must have suited your oil tanker quite nicely too.

I remember the Julier being one of the best sportsbike passes, a fantastic run all the way from Chur to Silvaplana - a fine way to get to the Stelvio.

With the Tenere I may take the San Bernadino and Splugen on the way to the Stelvio next year, the latter definately not being a great sportsbike road, but probably the most stunning pass I have ridden to date.

JohnnyBoxer;3195567Certainly not the best pass in Europe & doesn't really go anywhere to hardly vital on a journey[/QUOTE said:
It is in my way between Bormio and the Dolomites on next years trip.

Rather go over it than around it, even if they blew a tunnel under the pass I would still go over the top.

I certainly won't rush back. I thought the Stelvio was poo. Impressive, yes, but as a riders road it sucks sweaty bum.

Plenty of better alternatives in the area, you just need a good buddy to tell you which way to head :thumb

Cheers good buddy, we had a great time (you know who you are :thumb2).

It's a shame you didn't enjoy the Stelvio, for whatever reasons. That's eleven euro the locals may not not be getting when and if they introduce a toll.

Here we go, all spouting about our favourite passes being the best. The point is we've ridden the Stelvio. It is, and will remain the classic pass for those who are starting out on their exploration of the Alps, and for that reason a small fee is likely to do little to discourage UK riders. :thumb2
