hi all, does anyone know what the output should be coming out of the charging cradle for a tom tom rider sat nav, i'm getting 12v from the cable that enters the cradle but between 4.5 and 5 from the pins of the cradle itself, is this correct. i'm on my second cradle and trust it as much as I could throw my gs. should have bought a garmin :blast

Tomtom Rider cradle output is 5 volts. 35 K miles on this cradle no problems.
Rider v1 cradles had problems. never had a problem with Rider V2.
Would not consider downgrading to a Garmin.

Vibration killed the first V2 cradle on my GS. I fitted a Touratech anti-vibration mount and 7000 miles so far on the replacement without a problem.

I've had two V2 cradles destroyed by vibration. The third one also started to fail in the same way, so I modified it with some pieces of rubber sheet stuck in place to take up the slack movement in the pivoting plate. It lasted a lot better than the first two but was damaged in a road accident back in March. Dealer is fitting a shiny new one as part of the insurance job (and I also have a brand new one in a box at home as a spare). It is a piss poor design - and the latest TT Riders use the same physical arrangement (albeit with more pins) so I daresay they'll be just as short-lived.

None of mine have failed due to internal corrosion - it has always been vibration induced failure of the pivoting plate.

I've had the pivot pins work loose and simply fall out, but the usual failure mode has resulted from the two tiny lugs on either side of the plate weakening and finally breaking off. When this happens, the plate pivots a bit further than normal, allowing the two coil springs inside to simply fall out. With no spring pressure, the dock no longer locks into the TomTom (and you lose all electrical contact).

I found I was replacing the dock every 12 months or so.

I got through about 7 tomtom 1 mounts before I bought a second hand touratech mount which clamps the satnav tightly against the charging pins ,one mount lasted less than 10 miles before it fell apart when I hit a pothole. TomTom as a company are shite as they deny that they ever had a problem with their mounts.

My experience too - when I tried to claim a cradle under warranty they virtually accused me of stealing it because I didn't have a receipt.

I didn't have a receipt because it was a pressie!

I too went the Touratech route which cured the problem - an expensive fix for something that was poorly engineered in the first place.

Never again.
