Tom Tom restarts, drains, won't restart

I've searched through the forum, can't find anything that answers this one...

Has anyone experienced this?

Rider 2 - unit charges ok on the bike.

After riding I switch off the unit. A minute or so later it switches itself on again (this after removal from the bike mount).

Inevitably this often results in the unit losing all charge (if the restart happens when I'm not looking).

Previously, connection to a power supply (bike or mains) would bring up the start-up screen but not now.

The unit is now completely dead. Overnight charging has now impact on it. Starting by pressing the on switch does nothing. I've done the soft restart (remove SD card and paperclip the hole for over 15 seconds) - nada.

I had to send the unit back to TT previously for pretty much the same problem and they returned it saying there was no fault?!?

I've requested another return to TT but would like to know if anyone has had this kind of problem.

I'm wondering if it's a software fault (causing the auto restart) but the software has been re-installed more than one (and I suspect TT did that when they 'fixed' it the last time it went back to them.

I can't touch the software now because without power up I can't USB it to my PC.

It took me 18 months to finally get this unit to charge on my bike (trying, giving up, trying etc) - now on a BM Adventure the BM guys sorted the wiring and used a new cable/plug I had to buy from TT - so it's now pretty frustrating that the unit is failing again.

I can't really afford another SatNav but it's beginning to look like that is the way I will have to go... unless anyone here can suggest anything else to try...

Thanks in advance

Ian

How do you get at the battery?

I didn't realise it was ok to change the battery or that they could expire!

Is it just a case of removing the rear casing and lifting out the battery?

Technically challenged here so don't want to mess the thing up!

Opening up the device

I just found a youtube video of a guy demonstrating how to get to the battery.

Tried it myself to discover they use pesky little 'security screws' which are hex shape but have a central pin which requires a tool with a hole to accommodate the pin!

Annoyingly, the pin was low enough on three of the screws for a hex-shaped driver to undo them but the 4th one prevented the driver getting purchase...

For anyone who might find this thread useful in future the video can be seen at:

And...

"the security bits you need to open this look like a torx bit with a hole in the center axis. They are listed as :1 of: 32 Locksmith Security Drill Bits on Amazon, You will also need a very small standard torx bit. It looks like you might find a combination set that has both types of bits in it.

The battery is a Samsung icr18650-22 with a 3 wire connector on it."

I couldn't find the battery on eBay by searching on that name so I searched for Tom Tom Rider Battery and found some - there are two versions - a cylindrical battery and a flatter rectangular one - I think the latter is for V2.

Hope this helps anyone in a similar position.

I haven't tried the fix yet. I've ordered a service return with Tom Tom so I'm tempted to send the device back to them with a note asking them to check the battery...
