Sorry guys, I know this subject has probably been raised before, BUT Im after a swift response so that Santa can sort me out. General riding about Britain and next July a trip across to Italy to meet friends then ride back via Switzerland etc etc back to UK. Has anyone out there got practical experince of both units ? If so could I have your personal opinion regarding your favoured unit. If you own either, could you tell me your personal view .
Im not looking to start a world war here, nor to be told that its MY choice and MY opinion that counts. Just some good old fashioned opinions based on experience would help me make the final decision. If it s any help, simply on what Ive read I tend to initially favour the Garmin - but I fear that this is because I know nothing of the practicality of the Tom Tom. Over to you guys and gals. :bounce1

Just started using the TTR for work on a bike. Very impressed with the mapping system and the speed of calculation. The only thing I have found at the moment is that the Garmin / Mapsource is far better with POI's, they cover things such as ATM's and just overall have a better range of variety.

Currently I have a Quest 1 but am in the market so just trying to decide!

If you ride your bike as if you drove a car - on straight roads between crossings - any car navigator including the TTR will do a great job. They will all guide you to your destination.

If you ride your bike just for fun - looking for nice curvy roads - you need a GPS to which you can upload routes. Only Garmin can do this. Almost any rugged Garmin will do the job including the Quest. But the TTR will not.

i went for the 2610 with full bike kit from gpsw.co.uk for £240 all in.

check this thread for a few opinions

http://ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87940

as far as i was concerned theres only 3 bike gps's to choose from, in my price range which were under £300.

Streetpilot series 2610
Quest1 (quest2 has had to many bad reviews in my opinion)
TT Rider

and the 3 questions below will help you choose.

do you need an internal battery? if yes the 2610 is out

do you wanna create maps and routes on your pc? if yes the TTR is out

do you need expandable memory? if yes the quest is out

Ive got a TT and create routes on my pc and stick them on the tomtom.
I use autoroute and then stick them on the TT as an itinerary.................

I must be doing something wrong

2610 EVERYTIME USED MINE TOUR THE WHOLE OF EUROPE 100% GREAT :D

I think the TTR is great and suits my needs. The price is very competitive (now) and although its been well documented on here re issues about the cradle/connections etc I haven't experienced any problems.

I think it’s a fine bit of kit (IMHO). And contra to popular belief yon CAN plan and download routes from your PC see here and read posts 5,7, and 9, by peteonhisway. It's always good to have a balanced view on things. :thumb

Also via TomTom Home they have scenic bike routes that you can download for the UK and Europe.

Is it any coincidence that Garmin look to have based their new Zumo on the TTR?

Incoming… :hide

There are quite a few recent threads that cover the pros and cons, but regardless of how much TomTom suits some people - I think ultimately, you are less likely to outgrow the Garmin than you are the TTR.

Questions to ask:

1) How flush are you?

2) Will your bike take a 2610 or is it more suited to a Quest?

If you are really flush - get the new Garmin Zumo, if not- snap up a 2610, get a 2GB flashcard. You will never regret it. :thumb

Gamin 2610

I see that this model, now discontinued, is still on offer by gpsw.co.uk at £190. But not for long I suspect!

If you're planning a trip to the Republic of Ireland, then you'll be needing a GPS device that uses NavTech maps, such as the Garmin or Navman products.

From TomTom's site:
You’ll never need to buy another map!
Unless you happen to visit Ireland, that is. :P

Even with the Garmin products, you'll need to be getting CNv9 if you want full coverage of Ireland..

maybe ?

maybe ? .. it depends on how many are available or how long you leave it ? ..
a little longer maybe as Santa RAM-man is busy, he still needs a few more mounts to make up those 'chrizzy prezzy bundles' to bring joy and put a 'happy' smile on some Tosser's face :D

Blokesstuff customer support is apparently poor to non existent. Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice...

Blinking flip! Soon the price will be approaching the cost of the Mapsource Software alone!
