AFAIK

Tom Tom = Can't preplan routes on the PC

Garmin = You can

BTW I've been using Garmins for the last 10 years so am fairly used to their foilbles. However others try to emulate but Garmin seems to be the one that hits most peoples wants most of the times. YMMV etc.
