I am thinking about getting an iphone - went into O2 shop on Monday, but the guy I saw said he wasn't there to tell what the phone would or wouldn't do.....did I want a contract or not.
When I said to him it depended on what the contract offered and what the phone would do, he thrust a brochure for their tarriffs in my hand and said, "come back when you've read that and decided." Then he walked off.
I was none too impressed. So I too walked off.
Where can I go to find out what the phone comes with, what is bought in add ons and how the thing works please? The nearest Apple shop is Birmingham, so it will be some months before I get down that way while the shops are open.
Any help gratefully received. My other option is a GPS thing - but again, never having seen one in the flesh I have no idea of how easy/difficult they are. BUT, people talking about Mapsources and GPXs and stuff on here, plus that dreaded word "download"...makes me think they are actually quite difficult and involved to work.

The new 3 G s Iphone has an 'app' that you can download that that turns it into a sat nav, the 'app' is made or supplied by a company called NAVIGON AG and it it is listed in the top 25 'apps' on the iphone.
One complaint is that it only has/gives a 5 digit postcode search but other than that gets good reviews.
It was downloadable for £37.99 until yesterday but is now £52.99, so depending on your point of view not bad value. It is due to get a series of free upgrades soon but i don't know what they are yet.
I've not brought this 'app' yet and would be interested in the TOM TOM 'app' when it comes, but having owned a Tomtom Rider V1 with all its problems this may not be that good!
The IPHONE could be viewed as a one stop shop (phone, mp3 player, photo & movie storage and back up, mobile mini computer inc web surfing and e-mail, and now sat nav)
As for not being able to touch the screen on the move, why would you, surely you set the destination then it's best to keep both hands on the handlebars whilst moving.

why would you? well, going off route is one occasion that springs to mind. or to bring up info on a different screen perhaps?
anyway. i wouldn't think it practical to take it out of a box anytime i wanted to input something, even when stationary. maybe you wouldn't need to do that with certain designs? dunno much about otterboxes, but i do have an iphone.
and a proper satnav.

One thing that worries me about sat navs is thetalk of the satellites getting to the end of their servicable life....OK, I don't for one minute think they will fall out of the sky BUT, with the recession, I do think that is a plausible excuse for Uncle Sam to withdraw his free service to the rest of the world - or if you like, the Yankie tax payers are fed up of subsidising your navigation for you. I think this is the excuse for them to start to charge for GPS services. If the iphone just gives me a red dot on a map on the screen, that is good enough for me - I can read a map, so don't need some bint telling me to turn right etc.
I like the idea of just buying one gadget that does several things...MP3/ipod thing. I can't work one of those either, so getting my tunes into it migt be a problem! The turntable still goes round though.
