I've had my TomTom Rider for over a year now, and have been using it on internal batteries, but I recently wired it straight to the R1200GS battery. Now it's playing up.

I'll be riding along, when it suddenly cuts out, then restarts, continuing to guide me on my journey as if nothing had happened. 10 seconds later, it cuts out again. It does this repeatedly for about a minute, then it's fine. About half an hour later, it does it all over again.

I installed the most recent version of the software (which apparently contains a feature which prevents the unit cutting out when hitting bumps), but no luck.

Then this morning I got an insight. I reached work, and switched the engine off, but left the ignition on. The cut out / cut in / cut out started again, for about 30 seconds, before clearing itself.

Then the magic step. Switching off the ignition. Problem went away.

What is this telling me? Any ideas?

A mate had the same problem which turned out to be a dodgy connection in the mounting. When the unit looses and then regains bike power it seems to cut out and then back in again. apparently it's a common problem and they've changed the mount quite significantly for the Rider 2

It could be that you are running the old firmware on the TTR I believe that on the later release (mine is running 6.52) they stopped it turning off when it was disconnected from the mounting. I think your problem may be that due to vibration the TT lost contact for a ticcy and it thought that you had removed it - hence it is turning itself off?
