TomTom Rider2

While we are talking about safety issues relating to text messaging, did you know that by isolating (e.g. using insulating tape) the second pin from the left (looking at the unit from the rear) you will disable the safety features that would otherwise stop you from texting on the go. Just thought I'd mention it..

That's the annoying thing with the Rider. Tomtom assume we are all idiots and will try to text and do other complex tasks while riding. The result is that it makes the system less useable. It can be worked around but I would prefer manufacturers to treat my like an adult and able to make my own decisions.

Unfortunately not everyone is like that Andy. Could you imagine the possible lawsuits in some nations if Tomtom allowed you to make calls, send texts etc whilst on the move. I think that the driving mode reduced menu (for want of a better phrase) is a good idea for Tomtom, particularly when the workround is so easy to apply and well known - if you have the brains to make sensible responsible decisions you have the brains to apply a little piece of insulating tape.

Andy Clift, with respect, you are free to make your own decisions. You can always sell you Tomtom and buy something else - a Garmin perhaps.

Clearly Tomtom's target market is the non-gps-enthusiast who wants an easy-to-use and safe satnav. As always, one man's "treat me like an idiot" is another man's "user friendly". Why waste time getting angry over something you will never be happy with?

With respect - When I buy anything I expect it to be fit for purpose and I am far from the only person on this and many other forums who have found major shortcomings with an expensive piece of kit from a company who should know better. I have seen many posts regarding bracket failure ranging from poor electircal contact to the bracket breaking up and dropping the Ride on the road.

I am also from the only contributor to find that Tomtom's service is seriously flawed.

I am not a `gps enthusiast' whatever that is supposed to be. A gps is just another tool and as with any tool it should do the job it was designed to and the Rider doesn't. You mention that the Rider is designed to be a safe and easy to use gps. Well many users are of the opinion that it isn't safe and their is a difference between safe and designed for idiots. There is no `law suit' problem here. That is a red herring. if that was the case all the mobile phone makers would have to find a way of stopping their kit to be used in cars - and that's illegal, using a gps isn't.

My wife uses the rider (when it works), I gave up with it and bought a Garmin a year ago. The Garmin works better and is easier to use - and guess what, it treats me like an adult and gives me the option to turn safe mode on or off.

Final comment. I and all the others that criticise various items of kit could just keep our mouths shut and let other contributors waste money on duff kit or kit that keeps `features' not mentioned in the advertising secret. Nobody is forcing you to take any notice of critical posts but if you would pefer to make uninformed decisions - feel free.

Sorry but you seem to be talking about Rider 1, this post is regarding Rider 2!!!

Ive just come back from my "honeymoon to hell and back" trip which I did over 6k miles on with my new Rider 2 and its nothing like the Rider 1.

The mount IS a very different peice of kit to the Rider 1 and IMHO its even better than Garmins mount.

:thumb from me and my pillion.

There is also a wee trick you can do with the mount when using your Rider 2 to not need insulating tape but ill leave you to find that out for yourselves, its half the fun aint it. :D
