My kind employers have just given me a Tomtom One sat nav to guide my way around the land.
What a brilliant wee device. Switch it on and away we go. Full postcode search ..3d map. Easy to use.

Now, ...Ive not read the instruction book yet, but, will someone tell me how my 2650 is better than this.
No, its not waterproof ...and its only got UK maps on it at present. I know these things, but its so easy to use and view.
The instructions are clearer and more precise. Its screen is bigger and its about as big as a big phone.

It has the same SD card? as a tomtom rider. If someone has a map of france ,...can this be copied, or is it like a Garmin. It does not seem to have any unlock codes.

Thank YOU in advance for sending me the french mapset. He says...hoping someone will say, 'you can have a copy of mine'

I have a TTR with Europe maps (on some CDs) which transfer onto an SD card (2 gig in my case, as I wanted all the maps of Western Europe).

It can be shared to another TomTom device, but only once I think, and then it's locked.

So... you need to find a kind person who has only loaded the maps onto their TomTom device (and no other).

Don't ask me because I've already shared my maps with someone else.

:)

Yes the maps do require activation. You can copy maps to an SD Card but when you change maps on your Tomtom you will get a message saying the new map has not been activated, and prompted to enter a key.

There are ways around this, but they are illegal, and since you can buy and download TT maps for the whole of Western europe from the Tomtom site for £54, why would you bother?

do any tom toms have something like mapsource to plan routes on a pc then download to the unit?

No. However there are freeware converters available so you can create routes in Autoroute, Google Earth, Mappoint, Mapsource etc then convert them to Tomtom format. The same applies to POI's - whatever is available in Garmin format is easily convertible to TT format using freeware.

I have the maps of europe on a dvd which was given to me.

How do i get these onto an SD card? Do i copy all the dvd or just certain files?

Firstly, if you havent already got a second SD card I'd recommend getting a 4Gb one - £25-30.

Copy everything from the SD card that came with your TT to the new card.

Look on you CD for folders with either country names (e.g. Italia) or something like "Western_Europe". Look inside the folder and if there is a file with the same name as that folder but with a .mid extension (e.g. Western_Europe.mid), then you are on the money.

Copy the whole folder to the root of your SD card and that's it. Insert your new SD card, start your TT and go into preferences - manage maps and select change map (if I remember correctly). You should see your new map in the list.

If it is not there, make sure you copied the folder onto the root of your SD card, not into another folder on the card. If you still can't see it then the map is probably an old version incompatible with v6.

You transfer the data from the CDs via your computer to the TomTom. You can load as many maps as you want provided you have enough space on the SD card. I just put a new (ie empty) 2 gig SD card into my TTR, connected to the computer and followed the prompts after putting CD 1 into the DVD Rom drive.

If you have all the maps of Western Europe the jewel box will contain 6 CDs.

The CDs will have an activation code (found in the box) which you will need to input (on the unit) after you have copied them from your computer to the unit (TTR for example).

The only problem may be if someone else has used your CDs. As I said in my previous post the activation code only works twice.

HTH :)

Thanks,

But what do you mean by Copy the whole folder to the root of your SD card.

Thanks,

But what do you mean by Copy the whole folder to the root of your SD card.

The root just means the top level of that drive. All I mean is copy the folder to the SD card, but make sure you copy it to the top level, not inside another folder.

You will have already copied the contents of you original card to the new one, so the new SD card will now have a number of folders on it. Just make sure when you copy your map folder you dont put it inside one of these folders by mistake.
