This article appeared in BMW Motorcycle Magazine last year. I was browsing the mag again and thought it was worth trying to publish on here (read bottom pic first!)
Many years ago I worked for a distributor for KHD Deutz in the UK. Being the largest manufacturer of air cooled diesel engines, a great proportion of which went in to the plant hire & construction industries, we saw our fare share of engine failures due to poor or no maintenance. One of the biggest issues being low or no oil on static engines that had no single operator such as compressors and generators
The Deutz answer was to replace all the dipsticks with the same length item only with the level markings moved further up the stick
Problem not completely solved but we got less engine failures as a consequence
From a personal perspective I was more interested in the effect it had on the gear changes. As someone who is typically tosser-sized a few lost bhp isn't going to make much difference!
At least one part of the article isn't exactly 100% true 'the extra oil isn't needed anyway consumption is not an issue on these watercooled boxers' , my WC uses the same amount of oil as the old r1200gsa tc did, mainly on prolonged Autobahn use
