evenin all..

I am looking for additional storage space on the GS (unless i ride with seat in full height I cannot carry the tools and puncture kit. Also hoping to avoid spending a ton on a lockable pannier side mount (?). My gs is outside 24/7 and wondered if anyone using the tool tubes has ever had a problem with theft/ attempted theft of contents? I see there is a lockable one available from the states - but that ;looks cheap and almost the same cost a a secure alu stash panel. Anyone make a cheap secure tube on here or post ideas re extra tool space options? preferably secure - ish

Tools, in London, how many do you realistically intend to use each and every day?

I would hazard a guess at none.

Leave the tool tube empty.

If in doubt, have a look at the bikes parked next to yours in the bike bays. How many have tools on them much beyond the cheese like screwdriver that comes with a Honda? Answer 1 in 50 would be my guess. How many bikes do you ever see, stranded by the side of the road each day, the rider wishing he had packed his 3/4" drive? Less than none.

Take your tools when your are venturing beyond civilisation for several weeks. in a city of 10 million people, help is never far away.

PS You are more likely to get your instrument panel nicked. Spend ten minutes making that harder.

Security screw

Look ebay for self tapping screw with torx head and the pin in the middle had one
On mine never was touched. Bore small hole through the lid and insert self tapper were the lid tightens onto tube. Then you will have room for all you tools just carry security torx of same size as said screw under seat.

I tend to agree with you, and have yet to be stranded in London. But I'd rather be prepared than have the wrath of a biker stop and say...no tools? are you mad..Again, if i do not learn to fix at roadside (unlikely as I ride a GS) then when will I learn..i am only looking for a little extra space for every day tools (tyre repair, multitool, small ratchet and sockets, wiring and cable ties). The removal tool, oil filter tool etc are left behind on a daily ride...

Besides, its an easy way for me to start seeing what tools I do need when doing maintenance etc if the only tools I have are with me / on the bike. I don't have the luxury of a garage to quickly nip into to find that one spanner...if i miss a spanner I have to leave all my kit outside whilst I go looking for that spanner, or collect them all in one and then come out again. So, what are my options if the tools want to carry do not fit underneath my seat.....

If you are going to put sockets in a tube.... Thread them onto a wire... Or you won't be able to get them out, which will rather spoil the air of calm authority as you attend to your 24,000 mile service in Pall Mall.

Seriously, there is an excellent thread in the sticky section that details all the tools you will ever need to fix just about any likely repair / service task in a home garage or on the side of the road. It's a handful of tools at most.

Get a small Peli case , like this 1120......

Totally waterproof, comes complete with padlock holes and you can adapt them top fit on any back rack with 20 minutes, a blob of black bathroom silicone goo and a brace of M8 by 30 bolts and nylock nuts.

Peli cases (other brands of similar quality are available) are proper rock hard boxes, to the point where many a Round The World Hero has adopted and adapted them as side cases/panniers with great success. :thumb
