Hi All,
I've just had a birthday, so consequently I have a little money to go and treat myself. Thought I'd get some tools for working on the bikes and the cars (I'm a basic mechanic, rather than a pro :augie ). I'm after sockets, spanners... you know the stuff. Looked at the Halfords Professional range (150 piece set - about £150 IIRC), and that looks fine, but any one got any recommendations for owt else around that sort of price range, or stick with Halfords stuff?
Cheers,
Dave.:beerjug:

i've got that halfords kit, good tools for the price and there's just about everything in the kit that you'll need. The ratchet spanners come in usefull on the 650

When i bought mine it was only £100 :D

Sometimes these "all in one " toolkits have a lot of stuff you wont need (like AF sockets etc).
It is however in a nice tidy case you can store easily and you do get better value when compared to buying single items.
If i were starting from scratch again,i would buy decent quality (not autojumble, chinese tat) socket sets(metric 7mm to 30mm),combination spanners (6mm to at least 21mm),Allan keys (2mm to 10mm) plus anything you can think of for use on bike or car.Plus a decent tool box with drawers.
Check out the local tool store and compare prices.

My advice would be to take a good look at what tools you really need
and choose a good make to get a good quality, Kennedy spring to mind, Draper not too bad.Like the previous post say quality rather than quantity.

i use halfords proffesional range,i bought the biggest kit they had and i "top up" with their single items if i need something not in the box,its good gear and it has a lifetime guarantee so if anything breaks they will exchange it without question.ive bought cheap tools in the past, never again, its false economy after replacing rounded nuts/bolts/fasteners you still have to go and buy a decent tool that would have done the job in the first place.i also bought halfords pro screwdriver set, ball ended allen key set, breaker bar, socket reducers, stubby spanners(not really used much but they were shiny and i had a gap in my tool box) ive also replaced most of my original bike tool kit with halfords pro kit.so you could say i like and recomend it.by the way i dont work for halfords.

Dave,
I bought the Halfords 150-piece set, when it was on offer at £100 a couple of years ago. Since then it's been on offer at £100 a couple of times so, if you can afford to wait, I'm certain the offer will come along again any time now.
IMHO, the 'Professional' range is a great bit of kit... it's not too heavy in the construction but still solid, the ratchets have a nice 'fine' operation... and it's guaranteed for life, at least as long as Halfords exist, I suppose.
