I went for the top box to match the panniers, but it's a pity it's not larger. The only way I can get a helmet in is by expanding it and then taking out anything that's in there. Even a map in the bottom means my System IV won't fit.

When the expanded box is so small, I can't see why BMW bothered with the costly expanding mechanism in the top box--I tend to always leave mine in the expanded position.

I wonder why BMW didn't make it both taller and wider? If they bought out a larger model I would upgrade like a shot.

If you want a top box that will hold one or two lids, get a 45 litre Givi. I agree, the BMW box is not much good for storing a lid in, mainly due to the shape I think. Givi boxes are more rounded.

I am sticking with the BMW boxes on my bike, but my girlfriend has a givi box on hers so I can scrounge lid holding space from her :)

IMHO the givi boxes are however not as robust of the BMW ones.
