So ive bought a vario top box but without the key, so is it possible to get the lock programmed or set up to match my existing ignition key? or do I need to buy another lock?

yes the lock can be coded to the key you tube will show you or as in my case dealer kindly did it in ten minutes (no charge ):beerjug:

Thanks IOM I hope i'll have an understanding dealer as you did!!!!! and will also check you tube.

mmmm looks a bit tricky, but doable!! I know i'll end up with springs and bits everywhere so might try the dealer first lol...

Your dealer can order in a lock barrel pre coded by ordering against your VIN No.

not done anything just yet, but may try it at the weekend! i'll report how it goes.....

Well I managed to get the lock out quite easily. you have to do it carefully or else the little leaves and tiny springs could ping out and you would never find them again!!! ive discovered that I need to get a leaf set as there are different numbered ones 1-3 and I don't have enough to allow me to replace them to match my key!!! so im going to call a dealer tomorrow to try and obtain a set of leafs then I think I can do it!! watched a couple of vids on you tube and seems easy enough... (famous last words!) will re post once ive done it.

This is what the lock looks like when out, I took pics to remind me what pattern they are in and also marked the lock with a blob of tipex so I know which way up to re do it!

There are 3 leaves on each side plus a stopper at the end, sorry the first pic is a bit blurred but you get the idea.:blagblah

It seems that I cant get a tumbler kit from anywhere! so I rang the dealer and they said that bmw sell the barrel and tumblers as a complete kit for about £20 and if I supply the biscuits they will key it for me foc!!!!! sounds good to me, so will be paying them a visit later today. I guess a tumber set would have cost around £10-15 anyway.

There is an excellent thread on this site somewhere that gives a blow by blow account of how to rekey a lock and determine which lock wafers you need ( numbered I-3). You may only need a couple of wafers, if you post here which ones you need, someone will probably give you them for the cost of postage. It's really easy to do, I've done about half a dozen locks in the past so it must be easy.

Good point Alan I didn't think to ask on here for a plate!doh. Ive been to see the dealer and as it so happened it only needed a number 3 and he had one laying around! (result) so no charge!! but I gave him a drink anyway all sorted now and yes very easy to do if you have a selection of plates
