Hi there,

Can anyone suggest some top box options for my 1200RT, the BMW box although a great bit of kit is expensive.

Looking for something with a back rest, good capacity, easy to install, looks good and is secure lockable.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Givi E55 on mine after transferring it from my GS. Not surprisingly it is 55litres capacity (smaller are available) and with different fixing plates it can be used on other bikes. The backrest is an optional accessory. I find mine pretty good and it does all I would expect of a top box. :thumb2

I have the BMW topbox I don't rate it at all. It's red or whatever colour BMW call it. Form over function. It's so good at locking at least 4 points quick detachable but it looses space because its double skined. It's much bigger on the outside than inside. I would swop it for a e55 givi and mounting plate. It fits most BMW models including 1600 gt JJH

Givi is great

Can vouch for this box.

Been using one for a couple of years.
Just adapted the plate with some other brackets underneath the BMW plate.

Seen a few come up on the website for £50 or thereabouts.

No leaks easy to put on and take off.

Takes a lot.
e.g. two lids
or when camping:
1 tent, travel rest, down bag, stool, spare bulbs, 1litre oil, disc lock, spare gloves, etc and I don't really notice any impact on handling or aerodynamics.

Don't have back rest but that accessory can be bought.

Far, far cheaper than the big bulky BMW version.

+1 for Givi - I've got a V46 Tech in black like this. Just preferred the styling and slightly smaller size. It will take two lids as the ad suggests but only with patience and not if they're both flip-fronts. Fitting the adaptor plate is a doddle and it looks quite neat without the box on.

looks like I am going for the givi then

55 of 46?? emmm

both look good, I am guessing its the same mounting plate for both?

Can you attach a back rest to the 46?

Just had a quick look and it appears that you can get a backrest for the 46 litre.

They also do a 47 & 52 litre case, again both with backrests if required.

Good website, easy to navigate etc. :thumb2

+1 on the Givi E55. Bigger than the standard BMW top-box and cheaper. I got the lid sprayed to be an exact match of the bike. Looks great IMO.

A picture would be good :thumb

Clearly I'm in a minority, but I rate the BMW top box great, takes two full face helmets, single key fits ignition, panniers, top box etc. very nice bit of kit.

I have had two Givis, not exactly cheap to buy, but cheaper than the BMW bu not the same security, build quality etc. As we put over a grands worth of helmets in, I think it's best done in a secure case.

Just my opinion.

The BMW top boxes suit the styling of the bike, whereas the Givi ones look like an add-on :barf Why spend £14k on a bike and then ruin the styling :nenau The Givi mounting plate also looks crap when the top box isn't fitted (most of the time in my case)

I picked up both my 50l and 28l BMW top boxes secondhand and will be able to sell them for the same price when/if I change my bike.

Can I ask what is the approx. new price of the RT1200/K1300 top box? and do they also fit on a K1600?

Also you say you picked yours up second hand so what do you reckon is a fair price. I have a Sapphire black top box with back rest(its the big one I think 50L) that I kept when I traded my RT1200LE in a year or so ago and its another thing cluttering up the Garage.

I might put on here under items for sale you see.

Thanks:beerjug:

I cannot tell you the price as mine was part of the summer deal, but it does fit a K1600 GT as the salesman took one of a GT and fitted it on the RT for our test ride.

I had a Givi E55, now I have the big BMW box on the RT. Both good products, but the BM box is a better quality box.
Be aware, according to SWMBO the BM box has a better back rest and as the BM box is better made it doesn't move about as much, so the back rest doesn't keep hitting you in the back on bumpy roads.
