I've searched the site but can't find anything much on top boxes! Either it doesn't exist or I'm rubbish at searching.

Anyhow, I'm looking to get one for my daily commute on a 1200gs - are there any to avoid or any to seek out? I like the look of the BM one over the Givi one but would appreciate any adivce based on others experience. Any tips on the cheapest place to buy them would also be much appreciated.

cheers.

lots and lots of threads on the subject so have a dig about; lots of differing opinions also.
Heres mine.

The BMW Variobox top box is expensive, heavy, doesn't hold much and can fly off the rack unless it's bolted down. (happened to me x3)
It's more stable on the BMW issue plate on the back seat but still prone to breaking.
Avoid.

Rucksack & cargo net does everything for me........:)

I've got the aluminum BMW one for my 1200 GSA and it's great (made by Touratech). Really well made, good locks that are fitted to your ignition key, takes all the kit I need for work and whilst not beautiful I don't feel embarrassed by it. Just so useful - and it swallows your lid to save you lugging it around. You may need a different rack to mount it on yours though.

I've a choice of 3 GIVI boxes for mine, the 46litre one being able to take two full face helmets. They don't look as good with my BMW panniers, but I had them and it seemed stupid to waste extra cash on a BMW top box as well. I've had the GIVI stuff for 5 or 6 years now and they're good bits of kit, easy on, easy off and sturdy construction to boot.

Top box

I agree that the Givi top box is really good. I had the 46lt one on my GS and was more than big enough for daily needs.

BUT BEWARE ! the stays that come from the givi mount and screw into the back of the bike frame near the rear light may well shear off after a while. Both mine did and I know others on this forum had a similar problem. It's a pain when it happens and means drilling out the sheared off bilt and re-threading a new one.

Not sure why when I searched this time loads of threads came up but cheers for all the advice. Must be a Friday afternoon thing. I should be working anyway!!

Have to say I like the idea of fitting the BM box to the pillion seat as it might not bounce as much which can only be a good thing. But, if it's really that bad then the Givi E46 looks like a good job. It's an expensive dilema this!!!

Are these top boxes easy to rob? I'm not planning on stealing one but I'm used to a tank bag which just unclips and goes with you. Not keen on the tank bag again for other reasons hence the search for a box.

I have a Givi E52 Maxia which takes 2 System 4 flip fronts and 2 pairs of gloves easily. Handy when you stop for afternoon tea!
