Torque Wrench questions

Any recommendations for good value torque wrench for use on 1200gs?

How do you check torque on mirror nut fittings? Presumably I'm being stupid!

... Halfords Proifessional range always does well in side-by-side comparison tests, and at about £50 (8-50Nm range) will do most of the bits on a GS; exceptions being Wheel nuts and some FD bits.

I bought 1/4" and 3/8" drive Teng torque wrenches from my local Screwfix trade counter. They're better than the average cheap Chinese wrench (although nearly all DIY grade torque wrenches are made in the same couple of Chinese factories and rebadged) and come with a calibration cert.

I tend to not bother with torque wrenches on non-critical fasteners (like mirror nuts ) Even though the factory manual lists a torque for just about every fastener on the bike, it's best to develop a 'feel' and just use spanners. You can use crow foot sockets as freeloader says, but be aware that you have to apply a multiplier to the set value on the wrench as you've added another axis of rotation into the torque arm.

if you need to torque mirror nuts using a torque wrench, then maybe your not cut out to do this mechanicing lark

,if the mirror is black it's facing the wrong way.
wheel bolts are either F.T. or T.F.T. but setting is not often found on a torque wrench..

Torque wrench at 90 deg to the extra bit and it will read correctly

But for mirrors

Probably just slightly less than 90 degrees, to be absolutely sure...

(you don't want your mirrors coming loose on you )

halfords pro range is excellent value, reasonable quality and a lifetime guarantee on a lot of the range. if you need tools you won't go far wrong with them
