Hi guys question,i dropped my torsion bar down to do some repainting on my rear drive case,when i refitted i had to push down on rear of bike to realign the bolt,did that fitted bolt and retightened,is that ok? i read somewhere on Adventure rider once something about putting a load of weight on the bike then tighten it up? any advice much appreciated....:confused:
 
it is a none adjustable fixed bar it can only fit where it fits.
 
The Torsion bar is fixed,but the final drive housing is'nt,when you disconnect the bar the housing bolt hole moves out of line,you have to push down on the rear of the bike to get the bolt hole and bar back in line,i just need to know if it needs the 185lbs on the bike before you tighten the bolt,to realign the angle of the drive.....
 
Your correct, your supposed to have the bike loaded with a riders weight on the suspension then torque up the fixing bolt on the rear drive housing.
The theory behind this is the fixing in the rear drive is a bonded rubber bushing - this is "twisted" by the movement of the suspension as it compresses and extends on the road. - so by tightening in the normal ride height position the rubber Metaflex bush is "relaxed" in this position and twisted slightly both ways as suspension fully compresses or fully extends.
If you tighten it with the bike on the centre stand then the rubber bush is twisted as bike drops to normal loaded height then twisted even further when fully compressed.

When did the torque arm become the 'torsion bar'? ;)

A torsion bar is a spring.
 
I can read the BMW manual too but they used to be called torque arms back in the day ;)

You are right they were,and back in the day it didnt seem to matter if you did them up with your fingers outside the burger van,now everything has a number or its gonna fall apart before your very eyes,bring back my 750/4 with its chocolate tool kit...:blast

For what it's worth, I've never used a torque wrench when reattaching my 'reaction link'...
