Im just back from a jaunt to Poland, wanted to visit aushwitz.

Stayed at a camping just around the corner from there, when i booked in, they said camping!! this is Poland in winter. I said yes, camping!!

Interesting says the young receptonist, we had another guy here on a motorbike that wanted to camp for the 60th memorial, but it was january!!!

Only a tosser would do that :thumb2

Hands up, was it one of you guys, respect if it was :bow

I was camping at the center for mediation, nice place, cheap as chips and it was open by the pope! First place ive ever stayed at with papal blessing :)

Happy to share any advice or details :beerjug:

I've just today finished reading a book by one of the few survivors of those terrible years....absolutely harrowing but fascinating to know of this womans courage and strength.......to see her family and friends "selected" and yet retain the determination to survive .......and it really wasn't all that long ago

"Auschwitz" is the German name it was given. On your map of Poland it will be shown as "Oswiecim". The main camp is at N50 01.715 E19 12.317

As a guide, you will find it approx 32 miles due west of Krakov - which is a stunning city and well worth a visit.

Many thanks for the advice, found it straight away, thinking of going to the Dracular rally(somthing to get your teeth into!) in Romania next year and this would have to be a must to visit.
many thanks happy Christmas,

I'll be taking some of my 6th Formers there in the New Year. I'm warning them I might get all emotional.:tears

Planning to visit in June/July 2008. Saw a recording of Parkinson's greatest hits last night and Bronowsky spoke about his experiences while filming there. Very moving. Then Larry Adler and Istak Perrelman ( please excuse the spelling ) played summer time as a duet, stunning.

If Auschwitz / Birkenau doesn't get to you, then there's something wrong with you - especially if you have kids of your own. :(

Johnny if you have the time, take a look at Stalag Luft III (scene of the Great Escape) which is about 240 miles North West of Auschwitz or 130 miles South East of Berlin :thumb2

Alas, it's going to be a swift one stop visit. I do of course need somewhere to go this Summer on the GS.

The site of the old Stalag Luft III is at Zagan (N51 35.956 E15 18.326) approx 80 miles north - west of Wroclaw. It can be approached from at least 2 directions - one of which is overgrown and virtually impassable sandy track - even though my GPS classed it as a road. There are no prizes for guessing which one I tried taking, so I never made it to the site /memorial. :o

You make your own mind up, but there was something about Zagan I didn't like. It had an atmosphere about it that made me glad to leave the place, even though I was knackered and hungry.

I like to keep my old GPS files - you never know when they come in useful. :thumb2
