Touratech Returns Question: Advice needed!

Hi all,

I got a set of aux tanks for my 04 R1200 GS just before Christmas. After many many problems including leaks etc I finally had them all nicely fitted and sealed only to find out that the fuel would not make its way to the main tank! I subsequently brought it to a mechanic (where it is at present) who after spending the weekend trying to get it to work told me that it just wont work without a fuel pump. He has contacted Touratech himself but is still waiting for a response. As such I am in a bit of a quandry. Can I return the tanks to Touratech? Given that they are not doing what advertised and also that a mechanic is having problems getting them to work does it mean that they will accept the return? Or should I just bite the bullet and try to go for the fuel pump and see what happens?

Never done it, but looking at the TT instructions here they state "No auxilliary fuel pump is needed with front tanks." The fuel lines from the additional tanks appear to be joined into the main fuel line, where it has the QD connectors behind the air intake tube.

They have a workshop at the back of the building, the guy in there, and ive forgot his name is a real nice chap, if you can get to tallk to him hed be your best bet, hope that helps.

err having just read those instructions, it appears to be a simple gravity feed to the bottom of rhe OE tank...not sure why your mechanic can't see how it would work ?
I had a similar set up on a Husaberg Supermoto and it worked fine....
Not convinced I'd be happy drilling holes in my OE tank but there you go !
as I read it....the two Aux tanks are connected and then a sinlge line into the petcock you dril into the OE tank....

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah checked the instructions my self and the mechanic has a set. Basically he says that the set up of the fuel lines to the tank are problematic because the one from the right side wont feed. I am curious to see what info he gets as am still waiting for word back from touratech. I am wondering if it is a vacuum problem myself, after talking to some mates they seem to agree that it is there is no proper suck for want of a better word that will take the fuel from the right tank and put it into the main. It is a bit frustrating. Each tank has a seperate hose that connects to a central hose which in turn is then connected to the bottom of the main tank. This is where it seems to be problematic. The right side seems to not be able to get the fuel through, almost as if it has no real vacuum at all. It just levels off. Its getting frustrating all right but I really need em to work and from the sounds of what Funners is saying it could be just me more than the set up.

physics 101... connect two containers of liquid with a hose and they will self level, from one to the other.no vaccum required...it should be a straight gravity feed from both tanks into the main, the only deciding factor will be the respective heights of the tanks, ie if the aux tanks are lower than the main then when the level fall low enough it'll cease to flow.
I'd check the vent hose for a start as if this is blocked the fuel will not flow either.

sounds to me it would be easier to put a spare can'a petrol in the top box

Thanks again I am thinking that it could definately be a vent hose issue which is not really a problem if I can find the kink or air pocket that is blocking them up !

Looking at the Touratech picture of the auxiliary tanks. It appears that the filler for the auxiliary tanks are below that of the main tank. If so there may be a not return valve to stop the petrol siphoning back into the aux tank. If so is it the correct way round?

the underseat Aux tank I had on my Husaberg had the filler much lower that the main tank, but it also had a long vent hose, this allowed the fuel to level with the main tank but not over flow by using the vent hose as an extension.
possible this is the same in this case ?
I'd be tempted to go back to basics and see if first of all fuel flows OUT of the suspect tank....
if so, then see if fuel flows INTO the "Y piece where the two tanks join....
then see if fuel flows from that to the end of the hose where it joins the OE tank...
that should just about cover it...
it's a simple system with no parts to go wrong other than kinked hoses etc..

200 mile fuel range limit

Having finally sorted out my seat problem I was looking for a long range tank option for my GS. My mate Tommy has an RT and that only needs refills between countries!

This thread has shown the answer not to be the expensive side tanks, which I had drooled over but cannot afford.

I'll stick to my £20 hand pump that decants petrol by gravity without you having to get a mouthfull of petrol. Apart from that having the potential to kill you, at over 70p a litre (in Guernsey) it's too expensive to waste.
